Maybe only 6 hp, but I bet every one of those horses has big, thick hairy legs.

Doesn't matter from an electrical view point. At 100% efficiency it's still less than 4 1/2 Kilowatts, which is bugger all.

The 6HP quoted would be 6NHP - NOMINAL HORSE POWER, which is quite different to BHP (brake horse power) as is being described. 1BHP = approx 2.0 - 2.7 NHP (depending on manufacturer), so it really is packing a whopping 12 to 16HP...

A bit of history about steam engine ratings - http://www.paxmanhistory.org.uk/nhp-defn.htm#NHPtoHP - I know the pic isn't a Paxman before anyone mentions it, but this is still relevant.

The engine shown is a Brown & May Showmans Road Locomotive - number 8742 - built in 1912. 6NHP. http://www.steamscenes.org.uk/engine...8742/pictures/

ahh but see thats where you're wrong...

for the low power rides that were around when that was high tech 4.5Kw was plenty more important was the amount of pull available to get the stuff around.

Some rides and amusements were also driven off of a PTO and some of the automated music units ran off of the steam directly.

    eyeball this site.

Very fond memories of hanging around the steamers section of the perth royal show.

This I rememeber.... click the cuckoo waltz one... Always knew I was getting closer to sacred ground when I could hear that one shrilling over the crowd and the noise of the rides.
