A few years ago I was in my house and happen to look outside when a bolt of lightining struck a tree in my yard about 30m from me. It was absolutely deafening. What really surprised me was the diameter of the bolt, it looked to have been nearly a metre wide

!
The tree that was hit was smoking/steaming and the top branch was lopped off. After the storm passed, I went to have a closer look at the tree. You could see a clear path down the trunk from the point of impact to the base of the tree where the lightining stripped the bark off. All around the tree, large boulders that were embedded in the ground had a layer of rock cracked off, like an onion.
