That is the modern day equivalent of a bar code. When you scan it you will be taken to a website which has information about the item. Real estate agents use them to identify properties as do other industries.

They're QR Codes. Originally developed by Denso for use in identifying car components. Same as a barcode but with far more information.
Get a QR reader from the Apple app store and then when you see one, open the app and your camera will read the information via the app. this could be a text file, link to a webpage web photo etc.
