I recently saw in a program which said that the US Army 8th Airforce lost more men in the European theatre than the US Marines lost in all war theatres during the war.
While the B17s were not as successful as hoped in protecting themselves from enemy fighters - they still managed a better than 1 to 1 kill ratio (not sure what is was) when flying unescorted. Of course each B17 was carrying about 10 aircrew to a fighters 1.
