    The lizards would have lost their legs after a big night out at the pub

    No seriously, they would have evolved that way over time because through natural selection, legs may have provided no additional survival advantage in terms of either mobility (eg they could move faster without legs) or aquiring a mate (ie the legs were working fine, but the ladies preferred guys with smaller and smaller legs).

    Easiest way to tell a legless lizard from a snake is are the earholes. Snakes don't have them. Also snakes don't have eyelids.
