The memorial to mark the spot where Katie Bender was killed was just a few metres to the left of the spot where I was standing.

The fatalities or injuries could have been much worse. Not knowing anything about explosions, I assumed that the sound of somthing ripping through the leaves of the trees above my head was some sort of shock wave. Obviously it was fragments from the explosion. A lot of debris made it into the lake and across the lake.

As I had been paddling at the other end of the lake earlier that morning, I had considered paddling down and watching from our canoe. When I looked at my photos later and saw the number of splashes in the water, I was glad I didn't do that.
