I enjoy watching NFL. I used to love Don Lane's show on ABC back in the 90's.

It is because the players are armoured up that they hit like that.
In that video most of the hard hits are falling awkwardly rather than being hit. A hit will always look more spectacular if the person was airborne when hit. There's a lot more leaping to avoid a tackler in NFL than other football codes.
