I found this old Zippo lighter while cleaning out my parents unit. It belonged to my mothers father who was a Scot who served at Gallipoli in WW1 & then with " Dads Army" at fort Cowan Cowan on Moreton Island during WW2. I can't find anything to support the fact that the ship ever entered Australian waters so how my grandfather acquired it may remain a mystery.
My 90 year old mother remembers that he told her he was given it by a U.S. sailor & that's it.

Reminds me of an occasion about fifty years ago when I was working in Roma - one of our "valued" employees was scheduled to take a heavy 6x6 water truck out of town the next day, and because of this took the truck home. Next morning, he arrived at the depot on foot, with the news that the truck was in a creek north of town. We went and investigated, and found that it was lying on its side in a creek. A tow truck operator, summoned to retrieve it said "I'll bet this is the truck the police are looking for!"
It seems that in the middle of the night, someone, driving a large 6x6 (shown by the marks where the wheels has spun) had knocked down all the guide posts and signs and about twenty bottle trees on the eastern approaches to the town. Sure enough, the turns of wire on the winch at the front were well stuffed with bark and paint. During the rollover the steering column had broken just below the wheel. The truck was righted, and then driven back to the depot by the mechanic using a set of vice grips on the steering column.
