It's a very cool optical illusion.
Another cool illusion takes advantage of the fact that you have no photosensors where the optic nerve leaves your retina. Essentially you have a blind spot in the middle of each eye, and your brain 'hides' this blind spot.

To do this trick get a sheet of paper. Draw 2 black dots about 5mm diameter on them, approx 100mm apart.
Hold paper in front of you, focus on the left dot with your right eye (or vice versa). Close or cover the other eye. Move paper towards and away from youwhile focusing on the dot until you find the focal point where you'll notice the other dot 'disappears'.
Show mates at pub, win beers, get the women.

I originally thought it worked the same as my example above.
Visual crowding makes a lot more sense though
