    Safety rating: D1 outdoes D3

Very surprising result, a D1 rates 5 star safety and yet the D3 only 4 star...

The expectations of how safe a car should be have been raised with side curtain air bags, etc. These days to get five star ANCAP you need to do a lot more than you used to.

There is also a significant percentage of the score that goes for how much the car minimises injury to pedestrians. This wasn't a factor, or not as much of a factor in the past. These days the safety rating is also given as a composite figure, so you can't just pick the car that is safest for driver and passenger and ignore the pedestrian side of things.

I don't put much weight on their judging. I note they list a defender as not having ABS. I wrote to them telling them they are wrong, and ABS has been option since 1999. They weren't interested in correcting it.
