Gun control is only about taking guns off law abiding citizens and empowering the violent criminals.

A quarter of an hour is a long time when the police are 15mins away.

I love a good debate..! the reality is that if you look at guns from average jos point of view thay are made to kill. however how many do they in fact kill?
Take the common car for example and its kill ratio or drinking, smoking. its not rocket science if we wish waste money and resourses start with the significant killers first and work backward......i think they wont get back to guns in my lifetime. the present system works in australia,ok so i miss my semiauto but in reality my bolt works just as well. i just wish the voting majority would wake the f--k up!

the hell it works in Australia...... i wont be happy with the level of gun control in Australia untill i can open the bedroom cupboard and look at a FN-FAL, Winchester Model 70 and Remington 870 shotgun.....

fact remains that legally, of those three, 1 is outright impossible to buy, another is heavily restricted, and the third still requires a purpose

however, should i decide that i want to buy something like an uzi, i make a couple of phonecalls, hand over the cash and i can get one a few days later, but that would be illegal......

OK, I was trying to remain light hearted and not get involved in this debate however I have owned guns legally and throw my 5c worth in.

I owned a shop in the UK, small brown goods electrical retailer & repair shop. I had a security system installed. Sods law says on the night my eldest daughter wanted the local newspaper to read I had left it in the shop. Fetched her the paper and thought nothing more of it.

Awoke at 1am to hear a tremendous crashing noise, sounded like someone had declared WW3 and no-one had told me. Lay in bed perturbed but not overly worried after all I had a security system and no alarm going off at least I was certain it wasn't me being robbed.

Doh, then it struck me, I had switched off the alarm when I got the newspaper for Michelle however had I reset it ?

I rushed downstairs, we were three floors up in the sleeping quarters (old, old house above the shop dated from the 1700's and used to be an inn with servants bells and all) with my brother who happened to be my business partner by my side.

He had the sense to have a baseball bat outside his sleeping quarters for such an occurrence ( I had mercilessly taken the P about this in the past) we went racing downstairs and arrived to find a stolen van had reversed into our shop completely wrecked the shop windows and frames and stolen all our stock.

I set off the alarm (I'm old and slow not dumb, insurance companies are notorious for not paying out at any excuse) and called the cops. They arrived in quick time and were great, asked questions I hadn't even thought of, diesel or petrol, tell by the sound etc.

Seems there was a gang in the Midlands in the UK who made a habit of this type of robbery. The cops explained it was lucky for me we didn't get down there any quicker as they had form for beating the beejezus out of anyone who caught them en-flagrante.

Bottom line was without my brother I would have raced down there in my undies with nothing but a limp d*ck for defence, not good.

Upshot of it was I joined a gun club. I had two small children and a wife to support and defend. I put steel shutters on the front of the shop re-inforced the doors and after completing the gun club training I applied for my guns.

I was advised "apply for heaps cause they always knock you back for 90% of it". I asked for a 9mm semi automatic, a .44 calibre magnum (think dirty harry supposedly the most powerful handgun at the time) and a .38 calibre along with 1,500 rounds of ammunition for each. Local village cop comes out and does the audit. Got a safe to keep the guns and ammo in, tick. Done the course, tick. Seems like a nice stable honest honourable guy, tick (you can fool some of the people) No probs he comes back with full approval for everything.

I was shocked and a little bit scared, I could have started a minor war on my own with this little lot. I did sleep with a gun under the pillow for a couple of months after the break in (scary I know) however eventually common sense prevailed and I gave it all away and sold out before we emigrated.

Moral of the story, not really sure however I do know I trust me to do the right thing. I'd never hurt a fly unless threatened and I'm 6' 3" and 110kgs, however I would never leave my family defenceless and it's scary when it happens to you personally.

Even back then think 1980's the gun clubs were stating if our guns are taken from us as legal owners the only people left with guns will be the villains.

Never heard of any gun club member causing a problem.

Sorry to rabbit on a bit.

    For what it's worth

They are only making it legal for those who have got firearms and would be carrying them anyway.

30,000 people a year die from gun shots wounds in USA and 50,000 from road deaths so don't think the law is going to change death rates much.

As for the argument if everyone had guns there would be no crime or murders, simply doesn't stack up, if it was true no gang member would ever dare taunt any one else with the phrase "l am going to put a cap in your arse"

Well, as one entered the bar, on the right was a large glassed viewing window with tiered seating. The seats had a number of barely bikini clad girls from which one could make a selection.

After we sat down and were having a few drinks, watching the floor show, I heard noises behind me that were unusual, I thought, for a night club.

I turned around to see there was a floor show going on behind me......

Well if its good enough for the Saffies, trying going out to a club in Jo'burg and see how everyone is armed. I was out with friends one night and there was a gun battle raging outside, only casualty was an innocent bystander who was hit by a bullet that deflected off an BMW windscreen on such a slight angle that the screen had barely a scratch on it. Also stayed with friends in Ladysmith Natal which is a bit like Puckapunual being a military base, went out to bar and i was have gun envy - even my mates sister carried a little snub nose 32 in her handbag.

We always carry a gun of some sort when going bush. Usually a Savage 24, it has a .22 in the top barrel and a 20 gg shotgun under. How else can you do the right thing and put wounded road hits out of their misery, and knock off the many feral cats that infest the bush. Join the Sporting Shooters Assn of Australia for a reason to posses longarms or visit your local rifle range for more info. Having one to hand at 2am when you are parked up in a gravel scrape off the road somewhere and you have got back to bed after having a pee as old blokes are wont to do. A car drives past ,stops , backs up, silence, footsteps in the gravel, banging on the door. Many scenarios could follow, but if things go west the sight of a shotgun is a good deterrent. However be prepared to use it , if you are bluffing it will be taken from and may be used against you.
