    New Chum's Expensive Cape Trip

Our neighbour and his wife left for the Cape a few weeks back in their 130.
I was wondering how they were going (he's not exactly an experienced 4WDer) so asked his son yesterday.

Ahhhhh ..... they're flying in on Wednesday, 130 to follow on a truck.

    WTF sez I ...

Apparently they drowned the rig in one of the creeks. Don't know to what extent, other than the ECU.

Sounds like a classic case of not taking a walk through first. I'm off tomorrow for about a week on work so the balance of the saga will have to await my return.

    I'll keep you posted.

hmmm that sux for them. I'm betting the first big one on the OTL or Nolans Brook.

I wouldn't be all that keen to walk them up there either - crocs do more than tickle.
    Cheers

    New Chum's Expensive Cape Trip

I walked Nolans Brook and the Pasco on frenchmans track in 2007 after being told of a few people drowing their rigs. The water was clear and flowing well.

I saw a good idea on a 4wd action vid. Get a cheap rod cast fishing depth sounder. Sure you won't find all the holes, but you will know how deep it generally is. And if you catch a saltie you can have it for dinner!

Well ... I finally caught up with him today. It seems Nolan's Brook was his nemisis .. But it was only the ECU, no drinkies for the engine.

Mostly inexperience with a small measure of bad luck thrown in. The 130 + CT came back on the boat and is somewhere between here and Cairns.

Looks like the insurance mob are going to pick up the tab ... a collision with water on a gazetted road no less.

I'll have to remember that one ...

Wow! We did Nolan's Brook only 4 weeks ago it wasn't too bad if you went left or right, the middle was a bit deeper but smooth driving would get you through there as well?? Another 130 we saw up there went straight through the middle no drama's. We did see a guy in a Patrol hit way too hard and dig himself in on the exit of the deep bit as per the photo's but after some good drying out he was off again.

I think Psimpson7 drowned an ECU up there as well but got going after a good cleaning??? Pete?

Sorry for your mate I guess his holiday was a bit ruined

    Cheers,
