    E10 Fuel

I have been in FNQ the last week driving a new commodore SV6 hire car (4000km on the clock).

The first time I filled up I filled it with standard 91 RON unleaded. The next 2 fills I have filled it with 95 RON E10 - as it was cheaper, and there is a yellow sticker inside the filler cover that says "E10 Fuel Suitable"

If the fuel consumption stats are reliable, I have averaged about 0.5 l/100km better fuel economy on E10 - which was unexpected. Similar driving for all tanks of fuel. However this assumes the telemetry is accurate, and is based on only one tank of unleaded.

    Just thought I would share.

Btw - the commo is very nice to drive and has comfy seats, but I wouldn't buy one - it is absolutely hopeless offroad The traction control also seems a bit slower to react than landie ETC.

Ben, I have found just the opposite using E10 in my V8 (4lt.) 93 Disco and the 96 3lt V6 Ford Taurus, the Disco on Standard 91 RON Unleaded gets 18/20lt./100klm and on E10 22/25lt./100klm, similar difference with the V6 Taurus. You need more E10 to produce the same power as Standard 91 RON for a given task, I have found the best fuel economy is with Premium Unleaded in both vehicles, on a long run I find it cheaper to use half Standard 91 RON and half Premium Unleaded. When the V8 Supercars changed over to E10, they found a significant increase in fuel usage as well, Regards Frank.

I am aware that ethanol has a lower calorific value than petrol, as it is partially oxygenated.

I expected an increase in fuel consumption, hence my post.

Normal ULP is 91 RON. E10 has a lower calorific value however a 95-98 RON. It is possible that the new commodore engine is able to advance the timing further on E10 and take advantage of the higher octane???

    Anyone have any info?

I must say though I have been underwhelmed with the economy - though I have been driving it hard at times.

    10.9 l/100km on ULP
    10.4 on E10

Other comments... It is near impossible to hear or feel that the engine is running at idle. It sounds VERY nice when worked hard.

EDIT: According to the holden website, the SV6 has:
Twin knock control sensors with individual cylinder adaptive control.
This could possible account for the difference???

Interesting that the power quoted is 195kW @ 6500 rpm. I will have to check again this arvo, but I am sure it is limited to 5500 rpm...

After being assured by several people that "you will definitely go further on a tank of premium than normal unleaded, but you need to run a couple of tanks through before you see the benefit", I gave it a try in my 1988 Camry.

After three tanks full of premium, I was still getting exactly the same 8.25 litres/100km that I had been getting for the past five or six years.

When I use E10, I get the same amount of difference. Exactly none, or at least immeasurable.

That is based on complete records of every bit of petrol I have put in the vehicle during the time I have owned it. It is not based on how much further I went on one tank before I thought it was time to fill up.

Either my car is clever enough to run properly with any sort of petrol or it is so stupid it doesn't appreciate when it is being given something better to consume.

So I'll just keep filling it up with the cheap stuff.

And now they use E85. More power, yes, but more fuel too I expect.

With a VT (V6) I used to get a cheaper (long) run with BP Ultra, round town it wasn't viable, ULP was equal. In the Disco PULP is a waste of money. I will never use E-any number.
