Diff locks really are the best

Hi, after the mineral springs meet up in Blackwood over the weekend I have come to one conclusion that has always had me in doubt was that cross axle lockers are the single best offroad upgrade you can make regarless of tyres, suspension or anything else. Mudsloth took 20 landys out on a small trip around blackwood in the afternoon and one small rocky wet hill put a stop to most of the crew. We had a selection of Discos, defenders, rangies and countys most of us had a go at the hill and regardless of the what tyres and no amount of right foot would the unlocked landys make it to the top even those with traction control did make it further, but not to the top either.
I had a rear locker in and did the hill without to much trouble and will be getting a front one in soon. Being able to attack hills with alot less speed will just make everything last that bit longer, and save them nice shiny bullbars on D2's

    I'd have to agree mate

They are fantastic, I only have a rear as well but they make a difference everywhere.

I usually run with the compressor up to pressure all the time now

I went shooting on Friday night and we were in some muddy ruts, and starting to go down. I booted it, flicked the switch and I felt the difference once it had engaged

The other instance was on Sunday doing a few rocky climbs. Someone did get a stockers Courier through, but with lots of right boot, a few bangs and some wheel placement

On the same climb I just flicked the switch and went straight up can't wait for the front when I get the money

    Yes but..

I too have a rear locker and made it to the top on my 10 or so attempt but my mistake was inexperience and not dropping air pressure to 20psi after the first 5 or so goes at the hill. I couldnt get up until I dropped air down then I made it a bit further each time and the car felt better each time and man was I happy no I was HAPPY and now I want a front locker and agree about the tyres as I have half worn BFG muds.
Another thing that I found out was front recovery points or rather that lack of good ones so this is on my plan now too.

I know what your saying as i have had a car with lockers but in saying that you cant just say the locker helped i watched chops go up that hill first attempt no lockers v8 auto s1 disco
There is alot of variants invovled unless you have 2 excact cars tyres and you drive them the same way, suspension setups and drive the exact line which is hard to do,
Pitty i didnt get a go at that hill with the TC

ahhh I got my info a bit wrong then i thought chops had lockers but he was just a good driver, but that county ute with twin lockers and all terrain tyres made that hill look like easy, compared to an unlocked defender with directional mud tyres.

The ARB guys have a Toy with lockers which they drive on their ramps to show how they work so thats a good example

They drive it first with no lockers engaged then again with both on and makes an amazing difference

I mentioned to someone on the day that a front locker can make a difference most of the time but in some situations- not many- you are better off not using it. Also bear in mind your steering won't co-operate with it locked in. At least with one fitted you can experiment.
Geez that blue Landie tray made that hill look easy!!!

Yes ive seen the ramp and cars on the ramp in action but the situation im talking about is not a ramp and different lines and angles could be driven unlike the arb ramp

Yes i agree. I feel its best to learn without lockers! as to get better line picking abilities so if your locker were to ever fail you

rather then be a credit 4x4er
