    Mick,

Ford used a charcol through the XE and XF range. It was just called "Charcol". Paint code was "AY" IIRC. I had an 82 Fairmont wagon in a fleet colour (Sliver Fox) and was going to 2 tone it (like the ESP's) in this colour

How many variations are there for it, quite a few I should imagine.

Is that the slate grey that had a pearl in it so it looked pink in the sunlight? Late XF early EA colour.

    Really nice colour from memory

    More info from another site:

    1982/88 codes and colours
    V/AY/EY523 = Charcoal met
    V/AY/EY523 = Charcoal (met var. 1)

Just what the variation was, I don't know.

Variations, and some colours have up to 10 or so, are slight differences occuring in different batches, manufacturing venues etc etc. The colours look the same until you put them side by side. They can be a painters nightmare as there is no way to tell which variation any vehicle has except to mix and try. What looks like a match when mixed can dry hidiously mismatched. No fun with the cost of paint and labour these days.
