Well back from the weekend on the beach, We went on from Lavis and it was a bit soft but did it easily only a little TC on 2 of the big hills and went off at Anna bay via the new Jeep burned to the ground.
Used my new camp oven for the first time and it was awesome.
It was a barmy 2 on the beach for temp this morning at 5 am when I got the fire going again, the kids wouldnt get out of the van and the camper till about 8 am.

Verdict on the the Tyres up or down, I would say down, I drove on with car at 14 and camper at 22, it followed the car Ok but seemed to drag me down a little just needed more right foot.

I let the camper tyres down to 14 for the run off and it seemed less effort to tow but I did notice it wandered alot more.

Saw a few Disco's on the beach and even helped a D1 that flagged us down, he said it just doesnt want to go I only bought it a week back and its the first time on the sand, he was Ok after I put the CDL in, he went past an hour later with a big grin and his V8 rumbling.
Will ppost a pic or 2 later with the camper.

what even posesses you to ask?
the whole principle of letting your tyres down in to get better floatation on the sand by increasing your foot print.
after being suck behind roughly 50 other 4wders on the bypass track around waddy point on Fraser Island, in the heat of summer because some moron had let his tyres down on his F150 but not on his tandem boat trailer and subsequently snapped the tow ball off, i can tell you, if you get yourself stuck on one of the entrance racks to stockton beach because you haven't let your tyres down, you will be lynched, no question!
simple rule, if you have to let your tyres down on your car, let your tyres down on your trailer, otherwise you're towing an anchor.

BTW, are you aware of the requirements and limitation for camping at stockton since the NPWS took over? this is from the 4wd association website.

On speaking recently with the Port Stephens office of NPWS in an attempt to clarify this, the State Executive of the Four Wheel Drive NSW & ACT Inc wishes to explain the requirements for camping at Stockton Beach.

    • • Camping is allowed within 100 metres of the High Tide mark.
      • Wood Fires are allowed, but should be contained by use of an arrangement, such as a brassier, and timber should brought in by the campers.
      • As there are no on site toilet facilities, the use of pit toilet facilities are not permitted. NPWS are requiring the use of campers own facilities such as “port-a-loos” for each group of up to 6 persons. All waste must be removed from the Conservation Area and not buried.

I have done a bit of towing camper trailers on beach's and I would generally recommednd lowering tyre pressures. Of course it all depends on the beach and how soft the sand is. The important thing is you need to make up your mind wether you will or wont before getting into any risky areas. Generally I will drop mine down to 18psi as soon as entering a beach area and have lowered them as low as 10psi. I have generally found the trailer easier to tow when pressures are down and have absolutelly no issues with the traction control.

Hey Craig, are you towing a CT behind you're 110 [Td5] along softer Esperance beaches like Alexander Bay or eastern Cape Arid? Just wondering how you get on towing when doing U-turn's or getting off the beach into dune camp sites? I've been reluctant to tackle [in our 110, Td5] notoriously soft beaches towing our CT knowing that U-turns and exits aren't always that easy.

Assuming approximately equal tyres/rim on towcar and trailer, drop the trailer pressures so the contact patch is the same length as the towcar at 15psi. That may be 8psi on the trailer.

Yes, there is more towing force required on a trailer with low pressures. However, that is more than counterbalanced by the fact that low pressures mean the trailer doesn't sink in anywhere near as far, so low pressures mean an easier (and often possible) tow on sand.

This works, I've towed in sand quite often.
