What a great quote.
"A Land Rover is at once a delightful runabout and a rolling torture chamber. It combines the best and worst features of a truck with the insouciance of an MG-TC. It is a car that every man feels compelled to buy at one time or another, but hardly anybody has a use for. It is best suited to off-the-road cross-country adventure. Conversely it is not specifically useful for shopping trips, or general family-household use, but that's what people do with it. This is one of several instances where perfectly reasonable people have seemed to take leave of their senses on first meeting the Land Rover. It is less of a car than a state of mind. Its owners are the most partisan group imaginable and its would-be owners are legion." -- Car and Driver, September 1964.
What a great quote.

130's rule
Absolutely brilliant Hymie ... as I read the first couple of lines I thought "sounds like my Series III"Tony was just saying before going to bed, "you'd better get some sleep, you'll need it driving the SIII all day tomorrow. Though why on earth you would want to when there's a perfectly good Range Rover or Disco to drive beats me."

Yeah that's brillant. Not many of today's motoring journos are that entertaining (Clarkson being a notable exception).
It's true - we are a very devoted, partisan bunch, but we also recognise the strangeness of our obsession and don't mind having a good laugh at ourselves.
As someone else said, "if you try to explain it... they still won't understand"
That was in Car and Driver magazine's early days when it had just been taken over by a major publisher and renamed from Sports Car Illustrated. SCI was a true enthusiasts motoring magazine. C&D eventually became a far right wing social comment and motor magazine.
