Guns

I shoot each week and always steer people towards a .223 or .243 as both are common and factory ammo can be bought for both to suit all the types of game you can hunt.I mostly shoot .303's and 6.5x55's and 30/30 and .44 handgun but all of them are strictly a handloading venture which is too much too soon for a beginner.Like all things you get what you pay for,my choice is always Tikka with a Lynx scope,they are better than Leupold at half the price.With .22's go CZ or Anschutz.You won't get a shooters license in WA without a fixed address. yeppa there are still .222 made new, if i was to get one today i would look at a remigtion 700. with the thick barrel and preferably wooden furniture.

reason, well its not light so sighting is easier, its good for 4-6 rounds before she becomes heat effected. with the 222 over the 223 you can just get those 2 more rounds in before she goes off a bit, its quiet compared to the 223 or the 22 x 250 or 22 magnums or the hornet so you not chasing the secondary all over the planet. they are all good rounds but harder on the barrels and harder on the shoulder if your popping of a few hundred rounds a day.

Once you are approved for a low powered licence you can have anything up to around a .357 as it is regarded as low powered / high impact.

If money is the issue among the best rifles that you can get for less than $ 600 is the Carl Gustav 6.565.
King gustav commisoned this rifle as a high presion rifle up to 800 mts.
It is very gently on the shoulder and it is a pleassure to use.

If you like to have something more modern a remingto rifle with a 700 action would be the way to go.

I like flat trajectory and easy on my shoulder so the 22.250 is mi fav.
The 700 action is very good if you would like to have a custom made 6mmBR which is among the best for long trajectory shooting.

You can build two separate safes for your vehicle, one to carry the rifle and a small very strong safe for the bolt and the amo.

Please do not use a small rifle for medium game ;)

Sory but I have to disagree, a .22 rim fire Magnum will do a humane kill on a goat easily. I have done many with mine. It is all about locating the shot and a .22 Magnum with a cross cut slug to the head will do it every time. To the body is a different story. I agree with what you are saying with a basic .22, but the Magnum or a Hornet will suffice, while maybe not being the rifle of choice if you intend to do a lot of goat shooting.
With most of us $ come in to play both in rifle purchase costs and ammo.
Every one seems to tought the top of the range guns and sights but these are often far from what is required unless you are shooting all the time.
My .22 Magnum is a Stirling and my .357 is an Amadeo Rossi and both have proved cheap, accurate and reliable.

Regarding getting a licence in either W.A. or S.A. I currently have a licence in both and I must say that the S.A. experience is much better. The local police here in W.A. are great, but they still have to abide by the rather ridiculous laws we have here. They also don't take too kindly to people bringing in guns from interstate - you have to get a permit - you are also not allowed to buy ammo on a interstate licence.

I use a very old browning pump .22 for bunny's, only cost me $100 and its very accurate. I bought a second hand CZ .223 that had only been used briefly at a range. Short barreled and dead accurate, the grouping's are fantastic and its great for longer range shots on foxes. :D Kited it out with a decent scope, bipod, sling, etc, which ended up costing me more than the gun by itself. The other great thing is that .223 bullets don't cost to much although they have gone up since the GFC.

Has anyone thought of starting a gun/hunting thread? I'm sure a few of us would go hunting in landys, I certainly will be when I finally get my fender ute.

Been a really long time since I hunted but still shoot target almost every week. Yep I reckon your right, Tikka and Anschutz are hard to beat.

I assunibg that he was talking about hunting and the 22 rim caliber only have a decent impact @ 50 mts, over that it loose force and also loose the flat trajectory there fore the chances of place the bullet in a critical area.
The SSAA agree with my comments and do not recommend to use this caliber for this size of animals.
The Magnun have a force and a resonable flat trajectory up to 90 mts.
Regarding cheap guns (and excellet) I cannot see how the Carl Gustav 6.5X55 it is not considered by you. when examples of them are for sale for $ 400 :eek:
My rifle cost me $ 350.00 and was excellent on 200 mts and it will kill a ferral pig no problems,

Sounds like most of us are like the rest of us.

If you're shooting more bunnies than goats then a .22WMR would probably do the job. BUT I would get a good 2nd hand one with a good scope because when shooting a goat you will need it to be precise(humane).

If your shooting more goats than bunnies then I would go a smaller centrefire(.222, .223). BUT I would get a good 2nd hand one with a good scope because when shooting bunnies you will need it to be precise(preserve meat).

When you get a bit of experience under your belt, have a think about reloading the centrefire. You should be able to tune a bunny load and a goat load to do both jobs with greater efficiency.

but I can't go for the license at the mo as i'm broke.....:( had to spend to much money on the car in this last month
