A 22 will cover all small game in oz up to a fox anything bigger will require a larger gun .222 or above am currently looking for a new or 2nd hand .222 that will cover anything even pigs at close range.
Bowhunting isn't illegal in most states. In fact I think it's only illegal in TAS, but even then I think there are exceptions concerning rabbits. It's legal because it's considered humane by the authorities.Quote:

You can hunt with bows in NSW WITHOUT a licence on private land, but to hunt on public land you need a NSW game counci licence. Same with rifles.Quote:

Ideally for the question being asked, I think a .22 even a magnum or a hornet may be a little underpowered for what he wants and should consider .222 .223 .243 etc. Having said that shooting with a 7.65 is something that should be tried.;)
A lot about shooting is the method not always the size of the gun. I have been shooting often with others with hp guns and have brought down clean kills with my lp guns that they have not done. As said the range you want to shoot over would be the main consideration outside of cost.

As you have never owned a gun there is a bit you may not know about and that is noise. A rim fire while not as powerful as a centre fire is much much quieter, so if you want to go out and ping off a few rounds at cans and pop off the odd bunny then a rim fire is the way to go. If you want a bit more power than a normal 22 then a 22 magnum is a very good option.
If you want to shoot goats as well as rabbits then I would suggest 2 guns, yes a 22, 22-250, 270 etc can kill a rabbit and leave enough to eat with a well placed head shot, the damned things are so loud that you will only get one (usually)
Down wind with a 22 or 22 mag you can get more in one go as the report is just so much quieter.
Also to learn how to shoot (which is much more than pulling the trigger - queeze gently) is much much cheaper with a 22 as the amo is so cheap in comparison. I gave my father my Sterling 22 about 20 years ago and while it is one of the cheapest rifles around it still fires very accurately.
Finally a center fire kicks like a mule in comparison to a 22 (I've owned from 22's up to a 375 Holland and Holland magnum so I have some experience with both. Worst I ever owned was a carbine 30-06 got rid of it as I started to flinch it kicked so hard.
if you can go out and join a rifle club and see of you can shoot a few different rifles so you can get a feel for each of them before you buy.

I have heard both sides of the fence in argument for and against both bow and rifle.
Argument for bow is it is very sharp and a heart hit the animal bleeds to death relatively painlessly. A rifle the bullet smashes its way into vital organs causing much pain.
Argument for a rifle is due to the high verlocity of the bullet with a head shot the animal is dead before it knows it has been hit. Bow is a slow and lingering death.
Which is right and which is wrong? both a bit, neither a bit, I suspect. All I can say is we are the only animal on earth that has morality issues about killing our food and we are also the only animal that kills with the level of mechanical aids that we use.
I ended up going vegetarian for about 2-3 years several years ago because I thought it was all to inhumane. then I snapped out of it when I remembered the world is an inhumane place. And started to enjoy a rare steak again.
I still veremently believe that a life -any life should only be taken for a legitimate reason. To me means you are going to dress it out and eat it, you are putting down an animal that is sick / injured / dangerous or you are culling. Shooting something to brag about it at the pub / mates / club, no matter how fast the death, is the real inhumane issue.
And some animals should never be killed as the world is a better place simply because they are here.
