To the topic of rifle size National Parks has specs on what rifle for what size game.(When you apply for a cull licence this info comes with the tags). It is based on velocity of the projectile rather than caliber. My opinion is that velocity matched to game size is the important consideration for consistant humane kills.

As to the licence, from my experience it is a complete shambles. None of the States have any idea what to do for people that wish to cross a border. After all it is still the same country..... isn't it? :soapbox:

Velocity in itself is meaningless - except when comparing firearms throwing bullets of equal mass - and thats not often. There is so much to the equation.

I don't know anything about the National Parks culling requirements - would be interested to see the list you mean - but there are legal requirements in some states regarding minimum calivre for deer. eg Sambar is .270Win I think (Victoria).

The last permit I applied for to cull roos was in NSW. With the tags came info regarding what was considered required for a humane kill eg shot placement and caliber. For example a .222 was acceptable but a .22 wasn't. I think the .22 mag wasn't acceptable either. (Thats if my memory is correct as it was a few years ago) therefore the velocity of the projectile was the difference. The reason being that a minute misplacement of the shot has a higher chance of still obtaining either a clean kill or unconsciousness giving the hunter time to complete the job.

Basicly the importance of matching the rifle to the task.:rocket: (sorry I couldn't resist the icon)

Tulip has just received her license, and is getting into the field rifle & metallic silhouette competitions. I'm going to have to buy her a gun now so she doesn't have to steal one of mine all the time :p

I'm getting her a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser

I was told even though I thought it was crap it wasn't to bad as apparently its the grouping that matters.......also the site was a touch out (not that i'm blaming tools or anything:p but was having to shoot off target to get it on target :lol2: )

it was 50meter range I think.....shooting with a .22 rim fire don't know what make of Gun tony can remind me on that and it was a scope....

AND I HAD A BLOODY BALL doing it......you know I had no idea how relaxing it was to do!!

Been stalking the bunnies at work this week (the things are absolutely everywhere). Don't have a lic yet, so been using the bow instead. Can stalk them to about 10-15 metres, and the bludgeon tip guarantees an instant kill.

It's the idiots you get, shooting animals with target/field heads that pass straight through and only cause injury that get up my nose. Fortunately there's not many of those.

I guess it's the same with guns and gut-shots too.
