Sorry about that mate, I had the same problem and finished witn an early tdi300 Defe. It is good, I guess that will be as good as a County for my use

I thought I had a very neat, low km's, 3.5 V8 1985 County in the bag, but it turns out that you can't trust a used car salesman - who'd a thunk it?!?
I told him on Wednesday that I was definitely interested, but couldn't get to it (250km away) until Thursay or Friday and that I'd let him know on Thursday when I'd be there to get it. I rang him back Thursday afternoon and he couldn't talk - said he'd call me back in an hour. Two and a half hours later I called him again and he tells me "Oh, I just sold that to someone else."
Talk about PEEVED!!!!!
So, anyway, now I'm going to hold out for 'exactly' what I want, rather than just 'almost exactly'. On that note, if anybody has a 10-seat diesel County for sale then I'm interested.
Also, does anyone have any tips on where I'm most likely to find one for sale outside of the obvious places such as the Trading Post and the CarSales/Carpoint websites? (Not that I don't want to use those sites, but I already keep a close eye on them)
Cheers,...Jon.

Ahhh...you can't blame the salesman...what would you expect him to do? Turn away the person who is prepared to buy it now versus someone who might be there Thursday...possibly Friday and still only might buy it.
As for tips.....you have pretty much covered the main ones...plus the markets on here as they can tend to pop up now and then,

That's a fair enough comment, but I'd basically said to him that unless I got there and found that it was completely stuffed then I'd buy it.
I wwould think that the least that he could do would be to give me a ring and say "I've got someone here with the cash, but you were there first so if you can say now that you'll definitely take it then it's yours."
You know, basic common courtesy type of thing.
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately 7 seats is not enough, hence my requiring a County (for the 10 seats). This rules out both of these vehicles.
As I said, I think I'll hold out for a diesel County at this stage. I don't need it yet, but it could be as little as ten months before I do.
I was mainly going for this one because I was about to get it for $4k with only 119,000km on it. It needed minor work for rego, but even if I had to spend another couple of grand it was still cheap at that price.
Almost all countys were originally 9 seaters, not 10. 2 in the first row, 3 in the 2nd, and 2x2 in the side facing seats in the back. So chances are if you need 10 rather than 9 seats, you will need to buy a middle seat for the front and get it installed and approved.
Most countys have also had the rear side facing seats removed, so you will likely need to refit them.
A county really only has comfortable, practical seating for 5 big people. The other 4 would need to be small (or willing to play footsies in the back...).
If you can find a (rare) county or defender hardtop, they seat 11.
In most states changing the seating capacity (back to original spec) won't be too costly or difficult.
You might be peeved, but that car wasn't for you!
These Landys seem to find their owner rather than you finding them.![]()
Ah, thanks for that info. That actually clears something up for me. I've been wondering how they managed to be ten seaters with a console in the front row. I'd assumed that they must have had a 'half seat' akin to that of the Hi-Lux. So, were they 10 seats in the UK but not here? Most websites seem to list them as 10 seaters (Carpoint/CarSales/RedBook etc.)
I don't really "need" 10 seats as such, but I do need more than 7 as I have six full already and we plan to fill the seventh one day soon...
In what configuration? What defines a "Hardtop" as opposed to any other County or Defender?Originally Posted by isuzurover
True enough. That's pretty much the attitude that I've taken now too.
The thing that irks me, though, is the way that he went about it - I don't see why some used car salesmen try so hard to live up to the old stereotype. I've met a few really great ones in my time (Including the one I bought my current Pajero from who bent over backwards to accommodate me by picking me up from Melbourne airport at 8pm with the cash in his pocket ready to refund my money if I wasn't 100% happy with the vehicle - now that's service!!) but occasionally you still strike one who's operating under some 'old code'.
Anyway, that's enough of me whinging about car salesmen. I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled till I find what I want (or it finds me, whichever the case may be...)
