SWMBO wants a new car - Opinions sort

Our manual MY04 Forester X is in for the chop as SWMBO wants a new car. To be fair, the problem is she got a DVT 2 years ago which, while fixed, has left her left leg prone to swelling and aches and pains, so pushing the clutch pedal is a pain, literally.

Criteria is 30k budget, auto, 5 star ANCAP, economy and a preference for something different (ie not a Corolla). We are looking at:

    Impreza R auto (I've had 3 Subarus....loved them all)
    Lancer VR (Hmmm........)
    Mazda 3 Maxx
    Golf 90TSI
    Peugeot 308 XS 1.6TD GCT
Citroen C4 (as per the 308)

Leaning towards the 308/C4 at this point as they're doing a great deal on the 308 1.6TD GCT. The Lancer is tempting given it's 4k cheaper than anything else and has a 5 year warranty.

Hoping to get some experienced opinions on these cars from owners.

    Cheers.

I have a bit of a penchant for Citroens, but I would put the Peugeot ahead of the C4 because they are a far more sophisticated car...and the little diesel will be very efficient.

I am trying to get my ma to get the Wagon 308.

I think the VW has to be better for resale, plus we have a GTI and couldn't be happier.

From what I understand, the C4 and 308 are identical (mechanically) for the 1.6TG + 6 spd EGC (6 spd manual, but is an auto with on syncro?)
