Unhappy Drove in for service, will cost me over $2000 to drive out of service . HELP

Recently decided to take 97TDI Discovery to mechanic to find out if we could do something about being a bit smokey. He said no prob lets check it out. A day later he rang to inform me that it needed new injectors (4) and it would cosy $1250 to have my old ones removed reconditioned and refited and then car will be fixed. Wait a minute I said, Injectors reconditioned from Paddocks spares Uk cost me $300 delivered. I organised this and after he fitted them he now tells me the injector pump is not working and to replace this is $2500 dollars. He suggested we get it removed which he claims is a big job and then get it reconditioned. After a day I rang him and made myself and him clear that he is basically asking me to spend a minimum of $2000 before it would be possible for my car to operate again. He said "ah yeah". So yeah I drive in car operating OK (bit smokey) and now faced with a minimum bill of $2000. Devastated!! Numb!! Spew bucket. I have lost confidence with this guy who is just a normal mechanic but assured me he was confident to do job. Any Advice????

Reply with no thanks can't affort it just now so put it back is it was when I drove in and when I have the $$$ we can talk.
If you have not authorised him to do that work then the injector pump should be as it was when you left it there.

A service is only a service. They should authorise any other work before proceeding.
Good mechanics will tell you up front what they have found once going over it with the option of proceeding or just pay for the once over and advice.

have you tried a cleaning treatment through the fuel system, $20 bottle ia a tad cheaper than 2k even if you have to buy a few bottles to clean all the crud out

Good point Dobbo, but I'm worried that the normal poorly adjusted Tdi smokiness is the problem, which isn't a problem as it can be fixed easily
    Need more info though

It's only about 5 bolts IIRC, thought that is a 200tdi, 300 is maybe a bit more, but still not a 'big' job

This type of thing happens quite often, the thing with diesels is if the pump or injectors were u/s to the point of replacement or reco the thing wouldn't start or run.New injectors are $143 each and bosch have them as regular stock so I don't know were the $1200 comes from. Pat

...mate i feel for you (but due to my poetic licensing being revoked I'm not able to offer a comment ) oh what the hell, as george130 said you drove it in working, whilst be it smoking a little, tell him you'll need to confer with the swmbo and get back to him on repairs ...if he has pulled anything apart that now is not running that was when you drove in then let him know its on him and not you .....IMHO of course

hope all panes out for you mate ....

    cheers
