Stevo, I reckon the coin system will go into every supermarket eventually. As for the carton thing, their hands are likely tied, the supermarkets will get a cardboard compactor, free of charge from the recyclers, in return for all cardboard being placed in it.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
Its the responsibility of the supermarket to effectively manage and protect their assets. It is not about abrogation of this responsibility by forcing the role off on to their customers. Theft, vandalism and mis-use of supermarket trolleys is a major problem for the supermarkets, it is not my problem. Perhaps instead of penalising customers by making them come up with the cash a reward system like say a 'scratchy' or points towards something on return of trolleys would be better? Perhaps RFID's on trolleys and alarm points, cattle grid type installation or other means of containing trolleys could be used. I don't think the the supermarkets have properly looked for alternatives and have just chosen the easy way out and foisted this responsibility onto the customer.
How many 'trolley collectors' no longer have a job because of this system ? In the past kids earning a quid after school, low income people including pensioners and those of limited abilities have been able to work collecting trolleys. These people are at the low end of the scale and have now been further disadvantaged because the supermarkets won't effectively manage their assets. This system has only recently come into my area. The supermarkets colluded with the shire to implement this system in unison so that the customer couldn't protest by shopping at the next supermarket. I reckon it's wrong.
End of rant.

Supermarket carparks amaze me. Have you ever seen the number of people who cruise through numerous times, trying to save themselves 20-50 metres walk.
It is hard to return those trolleys, that trolley bay must be at least 10 metres from the car.
We are becoming more American everyday.
