My R380 is going to kill itself at some point so I am considering my options right now. I have been looking on ebay and I find loads of 5 speed and 6 speed gear boxes for sale very cheap. I know in some suzukis they just mount the G/box and transfer case joined with uni joints so you can swap them very easily.
Is a setup possible in a RR? I would like to be able to put a 5 speed from any car into the RR and swap it out with less problems. I like highly maintainable setups like this.
The only issue I can see with this is ratios but I read on this site somewhere that the R380 or all LR boxes for that matter are normal car gear boxes and that the diffs lower the vehicles ratio overall. This means a normal car gearbox could be similar enough raitos to put in a RR.
A remote transfer is possible but not practicle or economical , apart from trying to mount it you would also need customs shafts and an extension housing for the front of the LT230 and also have to modify the floor as it would be positioned right up near the back seat. Rebuild it and it will outlast the rangie.

The answer is always an economical one. I think I can rebuild it for 2k, which is not to bad. I can get a reco one for $1600. I was told the R380 needs a rebuild every 150 thou according to the rover place, I dont think this is a very long time for a man box to last.
