To get you running, you can use some brass pipe fittings from Bunnings. Grab some plumbers tape as well - it will seal long enough for you to grab the proper item.

You can do this, but you need to be careful as pipe fittings are BSPT and the rad plugs are NPT. BSPT threads are designed to bind against each other and the taper will tighten the plug against the female thread.
NPT threads are designed to have an end seal against a washer etc.
Thread size is 3/4NPT.
There are brass plugs on fleabay but you need to get the ones with the built in O ring seal as opposed to ones with the fibre washer. Fibre washers dont like being opened and closed to often and breakdown rapidly.

NP fittings are readily available from any good fastener, hose and pipe fittings, or engineer's suppliers. BSPT doesn't always dry seal. Water in ferrous fittings does tend to seal itself to a certain extent (rust) but always use tape, hemp, or a sealant like Loctite pipe sealant available in a number of types.

I've been bodgy and just used BSPT plugs for years as I had them in stock.
As Andrew said, just be careful when tightening otherwise you will crack the t/stat housing.
