Thread: 1st Year Apprenticeship Help!

I did an apprenticeship through William Adams caterpillar, i got in with no pre app. at 16 have a look on their site search it on google. there are a few tests and that but not that hard. They hire about 20 app. per year in vic. This is an earth moving diesel mechanic, they also have truck positions. they have their own trade school and you get looked after very well in the likes of tools. All snap on probably close to 7 grand worth and you dont have to pay for anything really and alot more coin to be made in this field.

Although I got over being a mechanic was pretty good if you like it.

I dont know any at the moment but I would suggest you pound the pavement. If you either ring or turn up in person to a business, bosses like initative. It shows you have some drive and they can see you straight up, so first impressions count, clean and tidy goes a long way.

Depending on the type of mechanical you want to do light or heavy, depends on the areas you hit. heavy is big trucks, earth moving etc. that can lead to mine work, oil rigs, ships all sorts of areas.

light vehicle is the traditional car mechanic.

the bigger money is in heavy vehicle mechanics, but it doesn't suit everyone. Having said that, it is the area that I would suggest to a young person looking at getting into mechanical.

You will need good maths and english as trades now a days have a heavy requirement on both.

Lastly, many bosses actually prefer an apprentice a bit older as they know what they want to do and have gotten past the adolecent stage. Good luck with it.
