Just spent the weekend driving a D4 for an event... All I can say is OMG, it's brilliant!!!
The car performs more like the outgoing RRS TDV8 and when you put your foot down, instead of the usual TDV6 'lag', the thing just goes...
On the way to the event, we had a 2.5ton trailer on the back, we accelerated onto the Hwy and the 2.7TDV6 RRS behind us had a bit of a shock as he struggled to keep up.
As for the cameras and tow-assist... Again, just brilliant.

I'd have to say, this is most likely to be my next car. It just sounds brilliant. Price depends on how soon.
I have a little dream forming in my head of picking one up in Brisbane, installing 2nd battery and possibly an LR tank, and taking the long way home to Perth.
Price is the thing of course and the old Defender is still going like a champion so it's at least a couple of years away. Maybe low km second hand.
I've been interested to see how much better the engine is, apparently "heaps" is the answer to that!
I know it's a facelift rather than a new model, but does it feel more than a facelift to drive?

Can't wait for a test drive, sounds great. Been quoted $82k + ORC for an SE,so will have to wait and change out later this year or early in 2010.
If you go for a test drive in a D3 & D4 back to back, you'll see that it's more than just a 'Facelift'. The feel on the road is more like the 'old' TDV8 RRS and it goes like one too...
Neil, sorry, I didn't get any photos (but I'm sure Google will show you what a D4 looks like...). The car I was in was SE spec, with all of the optional extras but was also a very early car.

Has the new 3.0 overcome the lag I experienced in the TDV8 RRS ?
A few changes to the suspension as well, so more than just a facelift. Second battery won't fit where it does on the D3 (unless you get the 2.7 D4) so another spot will have to be found.
There seems to be less lag than before, but I've only tried it with quality European diesel. The main reason for lag in the TDV8 is the EGR - can be overcome using command shift, and the adaptive transmission can have the same effect depending on how the car's been driven.
It looks like the stuff in the spare battery compartment may not be there on some models (alarm I think) or could be moved. We will have see what we get in oz.
Definitely minimal lag with the 3.0TD - drove it on Euro diesel also and it is a beautiful touring wagon and still super capable off-road. Pricing for the 3.0TD is not as scary as you would expect, either, considering it is being sold above the 2.7TD (and compared to 200 Series Cruisers).
