    Why drive a new Defender?

As you mostly know we have been on the road for the last 74 days. During that time I have been amazed, amused and sometimes stunned by the comments and looks the Defender has got.

Some of the comments we've had:
"Jeeze, that's been well looked after! You've done it up well"
Me: It's a 2008 model actually, only 12 months old
"Didn't know they still made them"

"Is that one of the new ones? I really like them"

"What sized V8 has it got to pull that trailer"
    Me: It's a 4 cylinder 2.4L
"Oh, I thought they only ever made a V8"

    "Nice rig"

And today's classic over which I'm still laughing...
"G'day, nice set up. Looks a lot more off-road capable than my four wheel drive."
Me: Thanks, it's not to bad off road
He then walked back over to his camp site, his 6m caravan and his nice shiny 200 series VX

I've given up on trying to keep count of the number of times we've been walking back to the Puma to find one or more people standing near by looking at it and commenting on it.

The other thing we've had is a lot of people ask about the Hannibal rack and awning.

So if you want to have your 4WD appreciated ... drive a Defender

Oh, it also helps that there aren't that many of them around, especially towing a camper trailer.

I have just returned from a Cape Trip & was surprised to only see one deefer north of Cape Trib.
And it was owned by one of the council workers,a 130.

I was actually surprised at the number of D3's though, saw quite a few.

Also saw quite a few D1&2's,& even a few RRC's.

As for the comments on the Puma,it just shows most people know jack about 4x4's,yet alone LR's .

We know the feeling...when we were down at Corowa earlier this year a Blitz driver came up to us and said "what great condition that old truck is in"

we said how old do you think it is...."old"........no it is a 2003 model they haven't changed much over the last 60 or so years.

    ohh he said

    and just the other day..........

"wow was admiring that truck last week and thought it was in great condition for it's age"

and I said "it is a 2003 model with just over 50,000.00klms on the clock"

and they both went and had another surprised look

I'm not "home" yet, haven't even got back in to the Territory.

Must agree have seen a lot of D1, D2's and D3's around. Saw a 130 in Broome this afternoon and surprised them by waving.

I towed a broken down Prado out of the Vic high country and met a Tojo club trip group who would not believe that the Tdi would tow a loaded Prado for 2 days, one old bloke called me a liar to my face and my partner stood between us as I was going to drop the old bastard,It wasn't until I popped the bonnet to show them it was just a stock 2.5 that they shut up,the funniest thing was not one of them joked about LR reliability, with a broken tojo strapped to the back they all lost thier tonques.I'll have to learn how to post photo's on this thing,I've got some good ones to add to my posts. Not sure what age bracket you fit into mate....but my old man is in late 60's......so when it comes to things like posting photo's etc.....we do it over the phone . Then I get to hear him as proud as punch as one of his photo's appears on the internet , so maybe you know one who can do the same. Good site is Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket..... plus I think there is a pretty good sticky on it too. Good story too ,

    Regards

When we have done the trip with the BMW motorbike a lot of old timers used to comment " when I was on the 20's..........I used to ride........ and so on.

I just wonder if with the Defender, being a classic vehicle it would attract the same comments: I used to have one back on......... or when I was in the army.......

So far no body approached us here on Bundy but I think that for sure someone will make a comment if we stop on the road in the future

Did anybody have made comments like the above to you?
