    Boulia

Anyone been there in recent times ?
Is it still a tidy little town ?
Do you think it would be an ok place for an ol git ta live in ?

I'm thinking it might be a much better location than Quilpie.

I dont like Mackay any more. It's grown too big, too many people,
too much traffic, too many roundabouts and traffic lights, too many
freakin Queenslanders on the highway travelling at 80 k's.

I wanna go back to the red country. I love the isolation and I like to play in the desert.

    What do you reckon ?
    Cheers.

PS: We are all over governed to buggery, I want to get off !!

I guess that the problem with the old and remote towns in Qld is thet they are going to be negleted more and more
I lived for 5 years and like very much Childers but now with the merge of the councils I bet that it is going to get last in the priority list behind Bundy and Bargara

I had a beer recently with the guy that used to run the Mungeranie Roadhouse on the Birdsville track, he is the neighbour of some friends in Innisfail, having moved there from Mungerainie about 2 years ago.Hates North Queensland, reckons it rains too much.Guess where he's moving to? Boulia, reckons at least he will have some bitumen to ride his Harley on.Nice little town, and Mt Isa only just up the road.

I was there 2 months ago and found it to be a good little town. Had dinner at the pub which seemed clean and not raucous.

Walked home to the van park, and no"local" problem or shouting all night like you get in say Mataranka.

The supermarket/hardware shop was good with friendly staff.

It's becoming popular with the caravans going as far west as possible on the bitumen.

I moved to Quilpie 2 years ago and think it is a great town.
No roundabouts or traffic lights here

Boulia is a village on the edge of nowhere. Has about 140 people, one pub, and is the council town. Mt. Isa is the nearest centre for services like health care, Centrelink, major shopping etc. Mt. Isa is 280 k's north. I spent much of my childhood and youth in Winton which at four pubs and 1400 people is considerably bigger, but I could not live there or anywhere like it again. Nice for a visit. If you don't mind the extremes of climate, the lack of services, the distances from anywhere, high cost of living, lack of entertainment, etc. then go for it. Remote outback living is not everyone's cup of tea. There are other quite nice little towns in the west that are probably more attractive and less isolated than Boulia but all suffer from the "tyranny of distance", the lack of services as above. Barcaldine, Blackall, Tambo, Augathella are pretty good as outback smaller towns go.

It's been a few years since we were in Boulia, but I recall it was a nice, friendly place.

We did have a reason to stop for a day or so at Blackall a few years ago, we had to get some welding done on our trailer after a large roo ran into it. We found Blackall to be a very friendly place. The locals went out of their way to help us - and they do love their Yellowbelly fishing!

However, like others have said, you should consider the distance from major hospitals etc. The fellow who did the welding for us had a heart problem and he had to travel to Brisbane for specialist services.

Know what you mean about places getting too big - you wouldn't recognise Horsley Park any more.

    Cheers, Erich
