You said the range hood? well if it is that they try to get into it because the smell of food.
Spray with amonia to remove the odour of food and will be ok.
Please what ever you do do not harm them

In the past my ma had two 6 inch bits of 4x2 that she would bang together everytime she saw them. It made a huge noise, just like a gun, and after doing that everyday for about a month they all went away!

    Update.

We remodelled the nest box a little and they finally started to use it. They gradually stopped smashing into the vent and spend a bit of time in the nest box.

Today one of them brought home a snake, and appeared to keep offering it to the other one who showed no interest.

Who said the size of your snake doesn't matter?

The Kookaburras have returned and are smashing into the range hood outlet again. I can't find my supersoaker and the neighbour who had the extra long ladder has moved away.

Hi Jeff, the height off the ground is certainly a problem for you. Tool hire companies may well be able to rent you a long ladder. What to put up there that is effective and manageable from a ladder is another issue. I installed fine wires along our window sills with a stand-off bracket to stop birds pecking at their reflections and that worked but I was only 4 metres up.Good luck,130man.
