    Roll cage for County/Defender

    G’day everyone!

I am sure that many of you would be aware and even worried about the lack of strength in the roof of a County/Defender. I am worried about it so I am looking at getting some sort of roll cage for my old County. I have searched the forum and found some info on external cages built by some UK mobs, however they are way out of my budget. So would anyone be able to suggest a cheaper way of strengthening the roof, or some cage builders who could build something for less than say $1500? I’ve read that ‘Bond Roll Bars’ can build some hoops that go inside the cab for less than $1000 but these are only mounted to the body, not the chassis. The other option is just to make one myself.

    Thank you in advance!

    Edward

    Hi Edward,

I think the cargo barries provide a small amount of extra protection for a good price.

I have a Protection and Performance cage, which I modified a bit, so let me know if you want any measurements or similar and I can get them for you. Few pics that may give you some ideas.

You need to be aware of the regs too. It will need to be engineered, and AFAIK the only state in Australia where a 6 point cage can be engineered is QLD. All other states to my knowledge will only let you have a 4 point. The sticking point seems to be restriciting egress from the vehicle footwells, so a Defender may get away with this as the friont legs go down on the engine side of the firewall

it should also be noted that technically, having a cage that goes through the top of the front guards to the chassis is technically illegal in queensland, because while there is a modification code for internal rollcages, the last time i looked, there wasnt one for an external rollcage.....

Intersting point. They seem to refer to everything external as ladder racks tho!

Mine doesnt go though technically. It just bolts through to a hidden structure

you would be surprised how well they do hold up in a roll,

Good thing to note,.. If you have heavy gear in it, Lock the centre box,

Its already been said, but a cargo cage really does add a bit of protection on the cheap,
I remember a family that would practice “roll positions” things to brace and where to push yourself to improve your chances in a roll.
a roof cage can some times help turn what could be a roll into just a tip on the side,

you should be able to find lots of photos on here of the army roll bars, on the ffrs they have nice lights on them, and the support triangles are very high up so the space around them is very useable,

My plan is to fabricate a cargo barrier with a frame made of steam pipe (thick wall)
The frame will be similar to the example on the photo attached.
Perhaps I would look into in join in to the future roofrack to protect a bit the roof at the front and also transfer the weight of the cargo on the rack to the chassis.

The second image is another alternative with an arch at the back as well.
    Cheers

So on a cab chassis, a well designed tray head board would be worth considering?

    cheers

Hi guys, long time lurker-first time poster.

As a person involved in Rallying I have delt with a few people in reguards to cages. I personally got a full weld-in kit (tower to tower) for my rally car delivered to WA for under $1500 from Bond Roll Bars so it's worth calling them at least. Otherwise get in touch with you local motor or car club and see who the local cage builder is as they all have to be good to even be allowed to do it in the first place.

I have put a cargo barrier in my TD5 Disco for piece of mind as much as anything else (that and it's my service barge so needs to carry lots of gear to events) and i'm sure it'll help in the case of a rollover.
