Rust preventative
Has anyone used a product called Penetrol. I am told you can use it neat or mix it with most paints. Apparantly a favourite amongst Hot Rodders.
This link has more info.

I've used it as a binder with wall paint. I also thought it would make a great rust preventative paint additive. It advertises as doing much the same thing as POR15, although I'm not sure if they are the same chemistry.
Both of them are a bugger to get on with a brush, slow, tacky, make your brush stick to the surface more than you want - if you can spray I reckon you'd save yourself an afternoon's trouble.
Oh, and Penetrol is $17 or something a litre, and POR15 is $50 or $65 a litre.
Dunno what it does on rust.

I have used penetrol a lot with good and bad results. I think POR15 would he a lot better as penetrol does not come close to galvanising as per the other thread on that.
For best results I would be painting the aluminium penetrol onto the rust and after its dry put on a hard type of paint like some sort of epoxy stuff designed as a rust barrier. That should keep rust away for a while.
The way penetrol works is having a very low viscosity and gets into very small holes and between the material. It then dries and stops water and air furthering the rusting process. Clear penetrol does not last long in sun and needs painting over to protect it, aluminium penetrol is ok in sun. But it scrapes off easily and can stay tacky so really needs protection from a hard paint.
If anyone knows more about POR15 I would like to know.

I was thinking of adding penetrol to the primer before painting panels. Am I wasting my money. Probably OK on steel but overkill on aluminium?

i use it everywhere! the tub trailer is a penetrol and kill rust mix...bloody hard wearing.
i use it in a spray can everywhere and have never had any trouble with it detoriating in the sun.
its good to spray at new drill holes in body work.
it sets like a clear laquer so watch where you spray it.

Penetrol is great for painting over existing surface rust prior to a colour coat.
It effectively seals off the rust, preventing it coming through the paint.

The sand blaster Guy's here in Mackay use the sand coloured
251 two pack from International Paints.
I use it on everything metal including the Disco ( roof ).
It's good stuff and not expensive.
