    which 4x4

what would be a good 4x4 for a begineer to start with, iam thinking of rrc which is also apealing as i have acces to a spare rrc.
other option's i see is the patrol, landcruiser, discovery, series 3, sierra.
iam just wanting something i can use everyday if i want and i can take off the beaten track to see australia other then by tarmac.

i stole my parent's rrc classic for the weekend and caught the bug been touring out around the grampians havent really left the gravel road's as its just to wet and soft and even some of the gravel tracks ive turned back on as its not worth risking it.
got it bogged once so had a go

yeah they have those laws in victoria to but thank goodness iam not a p plater.
that said i think id get more troble over my other car bf xr8 ute in rapid yellow.
yeah iam pretty much decided on rrc but was just after other people's opion's on them as a begineer's 4x4.
also what would be better getting an auto or manual one.
iam also thinking that the viscos center diff is not a great thing ether.

I'd either recomend a Disco or a RRC, since they are based on the same chasis and have alot in common. Having access to a spare RRC seems like the logical choice to me. Never had any experience with the Viscous coupling, but i like the idea of having a lockable centre diff more.

RRC 1988 or a Disco tdi300, your wallet will dictate which you can have

If i was you i would aim to get a 89 Onward Range Rover but avoid the viscous center diff lock, or i would get a late 94 onward 300TDi Discovery

I have a 98 300Tdi Disco and love it! very capable off road with a simple 2" lift and 31" muddies , but there is something about the RRC which makes it that much more to drive! i have a 1984 RRC and LOVE IT!

I think the RRC, Landcruiser, Patrol or Discovery would be all fine. I'm not sure that the Sierra or Series3 would be very good for touring, you could do it in them but most probably wouldn't find it to be a pleasant experience by comparison.

For touring, I think a major thing to consider is fuel use and range. Any petrol 4WD will be exy, so I'd also be looking for a diesel, though there are not many diesel Rangies.

Oh, and without a question the locking centre diff is the way to go.
    Cheers

    Yeah I'll back that...

a TDI300 disco is a great entry point but I'm a shed on wheels man and I'd suggest it in a deefer its even simpler and has the advantage of being hosable inside and out for clean up.

    I have started with a 200 Tdi.

I get 800+ K's each tank on or off road, it's manual and extreamly capable off road. It is very comfortable on long trips...... once you get the seat redone at a vehicle seat joint. $150.

Works very well as a daily driver too, finish work head off road on the way home... Try a Disco, see if you like it...

    Best

go the 300Tdi Disco, i am biased mind you You will get a newer model for your money than you will a defender.

If the budget isnt an issue then get a fender, definitely a tourer, mainly due to the space.
