    Micky T MTZ v's Bighorns

I have rung around and got prices from the local tyre shops and the two cheapest options of quality tyres were maxxis bighorns at $291 and Micky Thompson MTZ at $373.

Some people that I am talking to say that MTZ are in a different league than the maxxis and that they will last twice as long. I want a tyre that I will get good km's out of, should I fork out the extra cash ($82 per tyre) for the MTZ's? Are they that much better?

    Thanks Andrew

I'm running 35" MTZ's now and very happy with them. Nice and quiet + handle well on the black top. I've had big horns in a smaller size but didn't like them for various reasons. I'm not saying one is better than the other I just prefer the MTZ

Although I haven't used both, I have MTZ's - they are a very good tyre. You can expect high mileage and good road manners, great offroad traction. Many report at least 80,000km out of them, which makes them good value in my book.

Look for a recent comparo of approx 20 odd MT's through 4WD Action. The Maxxis came out on top of the MTZ and just behind the winner the KM2's.....however at the end of the day.....they are both good tyres from what I have seen. I run the Bighorns myself...do an average of 500+ kms per week and give em hell at least once a month off road and they have excelled.

Even though would be happy to run the Bighorns again..just cause I like change...next time will try either the MTZ's or KM2's, then I can be an "expert"

    Regards

I also run the MTZ's but got them 2nd hand for a good price. I think they are more of an aggresive all terrain tyre rather than a mud terrain tyre. I can't comment on the Bighorns as I haven't had them. Another tyre which was highly recommended when I was searching round in preparation for the Cape trip was the Maxxis Trepadore, unfortunately they don't come in a 33.

what size are you looking at getting? If you are willing to shell out $373 for the MTZ's i just paid $390 a tyre for the new Goodyear MTR's 265/75/16's with KEVLAR laced into the side walls. They are a nice agressive tyre, tough as nails and give **** loads in the mud. They behave very well on road and after about 5000km they barely look worn, edges of the tread is still nice and square not rounded off like some muddies, and i have only really had them off road once, all those km's have been on road. I can highly recommend them. Matt

I wanted MTZ's but i saw those, from what i have heard from people with MTZ's they are an awsome tyre but they seem to be quite a soft compound so you dont get that many km's out of them. Some people actually using of have used them might be able to give an indication of the amount of km's they are getting from them.

I run bighorns myself but i have mates who run the MTZ's. Personally i wouldnt waste the money on the MTZ's when really they are practically the same. They both perform as well as each other from what i've seen and the road noise is the same also. I couldnt tell you about overall life but my horns have done 10,000km's so far and they are hardly worn. Thats with a fair bit of offroading as well. So i'd say go for the horns just because you can save the money and put it into other things on the car

Well as of today i will have both Bighorns and MTZs so i will give you a comparison once i get to drive on them, both sets are brand new, MTZs are 285-75-16(but need rims for them to fit yet) i paid 329 each for them and the bighorns are 265-70-17, i paid 280 for these. bloody expensive.
