    Actually, no.

I drive vehicles that use oil and fuel derived from oil.
So I need people to produce oil. No oil and most of us would be stuffed.
I accept that there will at times be oil spills - fact of life.
While I don't like it, what would you have me do without oil?

Let's face it, there are lots of things in this world that we may disagree with but can we live without it?
A pet hate of mine is using child labour (and the appalling working conditions) in some countries, but do I still buy stuff made in China? Yes.

The Montara blowout may be a bad oil spill in terms of quantity of oil lost, but in because of the distance offshore and the type of oil, it is one of the most innocuous in Australia's history as far as damage to wildlife is concerned. Certainly far less than the recent oil spill on the Queensland coast resulting from the loss of containers from a ship (think about the volume of sea traffic travelling through the Great Barrier Reef). This panic about Montara is simply a beat-up.

No activity is risk-free, and blowouts in offshore (or onshore) oil drilling happen, but are very rare, and this is by no means the worst offshore Australia - probably the worst was in Gippsland nearly forty years ago, but none have been significant environmental problems compared to oil spills resulting from even minor shipping incidents such as illegal washing of ballast tanks.

That one doesn't take much thought...
For starters, marine mammals and reptiles need to come to the surface to breathe, in the process ingesting the poisonous oil.

With respect Milky, I don't think to petition is calling for anything other than remediating the spill ASAP and being prepared for future spills. It makes good sense to create buffers between sensitive areas and new development. I think we all understand that as vehicle enthusiasts we need the oil up here but as users of the resource we should also be concerned about minimising the effect the use of that resource has on the environment, which we also want to enjoy when we are out and about.

    Cheers,
    steve

PS Transcript from the petition below.
We, the Australian people, call on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to:
    1) Ensure that the West Atlas oil spill is capped at the earliest possible time, and all necessary resources are made available to clean up the slick and treat affected wildlife.
    2) Commission an independent expert inquiry into how Australia can be better prepared to respond to similar disasters in future.
    3) Create an Australia-wide network of marine sanctuaries which buffer and protect the most important parts of the Australian marine environment from polluting development.
