    A GOOD READ

I have just finished reading a very interesting book, its one of those that hard to put down. Its the true story written by E.P.F. Lynch on his life as an infantry soldier during the 1st world war in France from 1916-1919 its written in the form of a diary and tells of the hard ships, suffering, anguish, death, and the good time, and the mate ship that is developed between his mates.
The only other book that would come close to this written facts of history would be All Quiet on the Western Front.

If any one interested it called SOMME MUD by EPF. Lynch
    published by Random House ISBN 978 1 74166 894 0

My be we could start a sticky tread or a tread like the jokes where if you have read a good book you could post the details for others

I read Somme Mud a couple of years ago when it was first published....some horrific word pictures there. My God how those guys suffered in those trenches.

One of my favourites is, 'Goodbye to all that' by Robert Graves, it's an account of his experiences in WW1.

There were a goodly number of personal memoirs published as well as unit histories. Unfortunately they were published yonks ago and are out of print. Specialist militaria shops sometimes have them and sometimes can be found in second hand shops and markets. The AWM may have listings and some libraries may have archived them.

The 12 volumes of the official history by C.W. Bean are comprehensive but a long dry read. Volume 12, the photographic record is very good, very rare, and valuable.

My grandfather never said much about his experiences until very late in life. He was 4th. Division HQ Tunnelling Company, then 52 Battalion and 49 Battalion. His eldest son, my Uncle Karl, was at Gallipoli, 1st. Division Ammunition Supply Column, invalided to Alexandria, and after 18months in hospitals back here, was sent to France in 1917 to 4th. Division Ammunition Supply Column. Karl hardly ever mentioned his war service except about the difficulty getting a pension from the "low mongrel -----" at Repat.

The Desert Column by Ion L. Idriess is a brilliant read. Light Horse in WW1
