    Jap NAS 90,RHD!!!!

I wonder if this could be imported into and registered in Australia???

Land Rover Defender [ tradecarview ]

Seems to be quite a few reasonably priced Landys on the website.

    Hey Dobbo
    Yep,the NAS were auto too.
There are 3 RHD and 1 LHD on that website alone, all "50th anniversarys".
Freight to Australia roll on roll off around $1500.
Cheap Rangies/D2s with very low ks too.

Wouldn't there be other costs too?

    Fumigation? Customs fees etc?

Sounds ok though - NAS 90's sell for over US$40K in the states.

A friend of a friend lol ... (yeah I know) will charge $4K and do the lot...from locating, purchase, import, customs the lot..

My mate bought his Ferrari that way from Unique Cars UK...the convertibles are "cheaper" over there for some reason

Well I was very interested in this as I think thagt would be an awesome vehicle to own so I have done some investigating. It can't be done as a private import unless you are willing to live in Japan and own the car over there for at least 12 months and perhaps even 2 years, I am not completely sure of that. There is however a government scheme called SEVS (Specialist and enthusiast vehicle scheme) for importing cars from overseas that if you do a search for you will find all sorts of confusing information about. I found the list of approved vehicles and there is not one Landrover on there. So I rang the guy who is the head of the association for the approved workshops who can do these kinds of imports and his immediate comment was "no, can't be done, if it isn't on the list". After a bit of talking about what is required to get something approved and put on the list I am inclined to agree with him. If it is possible under the rules to prove to the government that it should be allowed in then there is still a cost of at least $30k for compliance of the first vehicle bought in. This can be spread across all the vehicles bought in but if you bought in ten then the cost would still be about 4k each for compliance and ADR engineering.

So who else really would like one of these and are there enough of you with the actual readies to make it worth taking this further?

Yep they are. They were never imported into Australia whereas the defender was and still is. The 90 is just a defender with a different wheelbase and that is apparently not a good enough reason alone to get it on the list. The fact that it is a 50th anniversary and a shorter wheelbase and a different engine might be enough but no guarantee.

Compliance should be a non-issue.If they allowed them into Japan new they would be the same or better spec than australian 110s.
Look at the steering wheels, they look almost as if they have an air-bag????,either that or a cusion
