Doesn't the Defender have smallest carbon footprint of any car ever built? Won't it take hundreds or thousands of years before your Prius(?) has a smaller footprint than your Defender?

Well my question would be, how many registered 4wd's are there? This will surely make a politician think about the number of votes lost if they proceed with something rediculous as this.

Reminds me very much of the motorcycling fraternity, we also used to cop this sort of rubish from the media and idiotic public groups.

    For the record

    I found this

    4-wheel drive petition correction

    Wednesday, 7 October 2009
    Letter to the Editor
    Dear Sir
I need to correct your story (SCD 7.10.09) which is completely wrongly reported. I have not called for higher registration for four wheel drives. Nor do I support the banning of 4-wheel drives. I had not even made a comment upon Mr Barry Craft's petition which I tabled in State Parliament. MPs routinely table petitions for constituents which present contentious points of debate which are not necessarily held by the MPs. I have always believed it is a citizen's right to have petitions tabled.
    Yours sincerely

I may not be a Queenslander but just sent this one to her

    "TABLED PAPER PETITION

    Subject: Vehicle registration, four-wheel drives
    Eligibility: Queensland Residents
    Sponsoring Member: Fiona Simpson MP
    Principal Petitioner: Barry Craft
    C/- 139 Duringan Street
    CURRUMBIN QLD 4223

    Num of Signatures: 19728
    Tabled: 06/10/2009
    Referred to Minister No
    Responded To: No

Information about the Principal Petitioner is available through the sponsoring Member of Parliaments office.

Email this link to a colleague
TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
The petition of the citizens and residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the House their concerns at the negative environmental impacts and effects of the excessive amount of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the use of four-wheel drive vehicles. A four-wheel drive vehicle uses almost double the amount of fuel, emits 17 times the amount of air pollution and three times the greenhouse gases of a two-wheel drive vehicle. They pose a health risk to residents in city areas as well as making an unacceptable negative impact on the environment in a world facing the threat of climate change and severe oil shortages. These vehicles are also a physical danger to pedestrians and smaller vehicles in the event of collision.
Your petitioners therefore request that the House undertakes:
    • charges incorporated into vehicle registration based on a pollution rating and the weight of the vehicles (essential uses and farm vehicles could be exempt)
    • banning of four-wheel drive vehicles from school pick up zones and intercity/shopping areas. "

If this is your true argument then you should target the shamefull Toyota Prius. It's construction and limited lifespan far exceeds most 4WD's.
Please conduct at least some semblance or research before supporting such misguided ideas.

If people can't drop off and pick up the tin lids in the 4WD ute, then maybe dad could pick them up in the prime mover!

Then they'd be petitioning that prime movers be banned and that people should pick up the kids in a 4WD.

The environmentalists will never be happy till we are all vegan, wearing (farmed) grass skirts and sandals and walking everywhere. The next thing after cars were banned, would be exotic beasts of burden like horses and bullocks.

Don't worry about them, the more we talk about them the more credibility they get.

I just wonder this "Do-gooder" Barry Craft in how many more petitions he is involved and which it is his level of education.
It is no fair that individuals like him are trying to dictate the life of others.
My only regret it is that my English it is not good enough to write in the paper an open letter directed to him and the other 20000 people
