    Which Disco?

    G'day to all.

    I am new to this forum, this is my first post, so I apologise if this is not the correct forum to ask this question, perhaps someone will enlighten me.

    My wife and I are looking to purchase a Disco to be sued to tow our caravan (1,650kg) and to visit more of this land than we can see with our current station wagon.

    I am looking for an automatic diesel Disco and I am thinking around the 2002-2004 vintage, a check of carsales.com.au indicates that Disco 3's are a little beyond us at present.

    My question to the group is simple, is any year in my range (2002, 2003 or 2004) better or worse than any other for reliability and are there any 'stand out' areas that I need to be especially wary of, other than the usual?

    I appreciate that this is a simple question with far from simple answers, but I am not looking for a definitive list, just somewhere to get me started.

    Any advice would be greatfully accepted.

    I have an 02 (which has been great), but I would try to get as late possible - 2003 or 2004 Td5 auto.

    Will make towing a doddle.

    This will get plenty of arguments here, but I agree, try to get a TD5 model if you can as it has a huge amount more power for towing

    Go a D2a (updated front head lights) they look the best. The TD5 is a great motor plenty of power in STD form and massive power can be made by a simple ECU upgrade.

    We have one and use it for towing a motor bike trailer and 2/3 bikes, which it does easily over takes going up hills (chipped) not as heavy your camper though.

    If you plan on doing a fair bit of towing I would recommend you upgrade the ecu. Makes it safer to overtake etc... D2a autos also have a bigger intercooler

    Edit: Also make sure you test the ABS, TC or HDC. Can be a very costly thing to fix

    I've got an Disco 03 td5 auto (Updated front lights) (Not chipped will soon) and I tow a 5.2 metre fibre glass boat and it has not problems. Holds its speed up hills and with the family, two girls and the misses, well you kno whow much crap they bring when you go away!

    Don't own a D2 myself yet! But I would like one.

    From what I have learnt over the past few years is if you get a D2 "chipped" it is a good idea to have an EGT gauge fitted especially when towing.
