So do you think it is because I'm a girl!

Well some of you may remember a couple of years back when I took my disco to bob janes..to have my first set of muddies fitted and change wheels around etc etc...and I came away not getting done and feeling really despondent as the guy treated me like an idiot and made me look stupid in front of the other guys waiting to be served.

I had my last set of tyres and wheels fitted there (maxxis) only coz I got a price I was happy with on the wheels and the tyres.

Well the car went in for its free wheel alignment and wheel balance today. I made very clear that I most importantly wanted the wheel balance done.

So sit and wait, and wait and wait....Then Miss Thompson your car is ready.
I thank them go out to the car check it over and walk back in.

I ask them "did you guys do a wheel balance" "as it doesn't look like it has been done"
very defensively they say "yes it would of been done as part of the service"
to which I reply "well I'm still missing a wheel weight off the back wheel which is the reason I brought it in"

Arsey guy replies: well we spun it up and its right
My reply: so where is the wheel weight then
Arsey guy: did it even have a wheel weight on it..probably doesn't need a weight
My reply: "yes all five wheels had weights" (as I'm thinking to myself I would be very surprised if a steel wheel with 245/75 muddies on it didn't need weights...****** trying to fob me off)
Arsey guy replys: Well do you have any vibration
    My reply: Yes massively
    Arsey guy: what speed
    My reply: 100k
Arsey guy where is it..front or back
My reply: the entire car shakes but badly through the steering wheel
Arsey guy: well it would of been done but we will run it back in now and quickly check it

Waiting, waiting, waiting for 35mins car comes back out with the nicer guy and he say you had lost a weight (oh really? thats amazing thanks for telling me I would of never noticed) and all your other wheels were out by about 90grams....

So not only had I got a weight now on the rear, but now ALL the wheels had bigger weights on....BUT they did do the wheel balance as it is part of the service and the rear wheel probably never had a weight on it!! which is also astonishing as they fitted and balanced them originally only 4 months ago.

So this time I came away feeling like I had a victory as rather than him trying to fob me off as I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm just a chick bringing in the fella's car not my own and I have no idea about cars. I made them look pretty stupid, and highlighted the fact that they are not doing what they say they do

Believe me, it's got nothing to do with gender.
A family friend was sure the services on his car were not up to scratch, so he set some 'traps', and arranged with the service manager to be there after closing time for a pickup.
Brake and clutch fluid not checked (they had been drained to half capacity to check)
Tyres were not rotated (marked to check)
Plugs were not changed (marked to check)

The service manager was none too pleased to have to change into overalls and do what should have been done.
Needless to say that was the last service done at the agents.

Similarly my Dad had his car serviced by the agents, he was not very mechanically minded, but had some knowledge.
After one service, the car was a bit slow to start, and the second morning, would not start.
Checking under the bonnet he noticed the battery looked different, some one had swapped his battery for one that was nearly dead.
Couldn't prove it of course, but was not happy and after that used a local servo for service rather than the agent.

    cheers

    I hope so

I took the car to another wheel alignment place after my fist episode of the wheels fitted only to be confronted with the same thing...the guy just baffled me with BS and then proceeded to tell me at the time that it wasn't possible to do it to my car and sent me on my way.

I got Ian to call him and find out why he couldn't do my car, and their answer was because I had specialist wheels on the car and the wheel alignment machine couldn't hook up to them.

I had standard disco alloy wheels on

    It stinks doesn't it Lou!

I make a point of explaining as best I can to anyone, male or female what it is that I intend to do to their vehicle and what WAS done to their vehicle when they drop off and pick up. I also ask as many questions about the vehicle and its problems if it has any, as this is a valuable tool in repairing/ maintaining a vehicle - listening to the owner/ driver IN a polite and respectful way. I have seen and heard all the 'pigs' in this industry, and I'm sorry you have to still put up with discourteous idiots this day and age.

Well done for remaining composed and pushing what YOU know was right.

It's got nothing to do with your gender Lou, it's to do with the name on the door.

I recon it is partially gender

And its good you caught them out

My wife wont do some things anymore, she says i am just better at it.
What she really means is,they will take more notice of you & if something isnt quite right ,you can front them,as they wont listen to me.

Its easy to see if they have rotated wheels correctly, that is not just front to back,as you can mark the brake dust thats on them.

they never rotated mine...as I asked for that also, his reply was I we will rotated them if it is needed. But I know they never as I asked them to incorporate the spare when they do it....(I'm not bothered about this though I can just do this myself)

The funniest thing was I never told them where the lock nut key was...so when the car went back in the second time I was preying they would come out and ask where it was as that would of been even more proof they never even took the wheels of the car let alone balanced them...but they never I wasn't that lucky

must of cheesed them off I only got tyre black on 3 of the tyres

When I had my MTRs fitted to my Rodeo at a Brisbane Bob Jane I had a similar problem. I marked my tyres before I went there though and checked them before I picked the car up.
No rotation so when they tried to charge me for it I started off nicely and nearly ended up in a punch up with the manager/owner. I ended up calling the Bob Jane state manager and the Goodyear state manager. Neither of them were too happy. I ended up getting good service from the Goodyear rep they sent out as he swapped me a new tyre for one that wouldn't balance up (although he tried blaming the rims at first). They had only done 10000kms though on the set.

However the previous manager of the store was exceptional. It was just when the owner took over the management that they went downhill.
I ended up bumping into the old manager at a different Bob Jane store so I go there now.

A great comment from the owner/manager was that they didn't expect them to balance well as they were a mud tyre!
The Goodyear guys loved hearing that!

    no, I get it too.

Usually If Im taking a car in its because its not mine and the owner doesnt want to get ripped or they have a specific bit of gear I want them to use to run a test/diagnostic for me to confirm something. IF I know that a certain service includes using that bit of kit then I'm usually happy to pay the money.

one place tried it on but quickly gave it up (like you it was the lock nut issue) and now that place and one other know me by sight lay on straight answers and let me use their gear if its not in use for the nominal charge which Im very happy with. In return I reccomend them as good places to go for very certain parts and services.
