    Parts from the UK?

    Hi Guys,

With the ozzie dollar being up, and having a copy of LRO in front of me, I am considering buying a few bits and bobs from the UK.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what experiences you may have had, good or bad?

I've been looking on a few websites for a while, and what I can find that is available in oz seems to be a little on the dear side, even with freight included. Maybe I've missed a good mob in oz that supplies or can get hold the certain bits I'm after, any suggestions?

Yes, I have checked the recommended suppliers forum, a lot to go through considering its done state by state, lazy I know.

it would probably be helpful when suggesting Ozzie suppliers that you perhaps hint on what you want to buy

so we dont have to guess

    Soz,

    My bad.

Along the lines of body protection type stuff, winch bars, sliders, rear bars, bash plates but also engine mods, intercoolers............it was a general question, maybe a bit too general i suppose.

I was looking into doing my own, but i know I'm not good enough and would never be happy with what I had made, just like the look of some of the stuff i've found out of the UK, and anyone else's I've seen in oz that i like has made it themselves.

    Cheers

    Smile Parts from the UK

Over the years I've bought in quite a few parts. However about three weeks ago I tried to order 4 complete filter sets for my 300.The cost ex freight was around $46 however i cancelled the order when I received notice that the freight was to be eighty one pounds UK. The reason stated was the the air filters ( must now go by size not weight ) made the freight more expensive. My last order was for a complete HD clutch kit (the works ) and freight was only 50 pound UK.

    Food for thought.

As Disco44 implies, the "gotcha" is the cost of freight. This seems only to go up and up, and is likely to be prohibitive for anything except small and relatively light high value items. Which is likely to cut out most of the items you suggest! Apparently surface mail is no longer available, which was the cheap way of getting most items. Last things I got the freight was more than the cost of the item, but I could not get them locally.

It might also suggest why the local prices are so high. It seems the only way to get a reasonable freight cost is to fill a container!

    O/S Suppliers

    G'Day Pando,

I've had good service from :-

    https://www.expeditionexchange.com/

    Britcar (UK) Ltd

Vehicle Wiring Products Ltd. Suppliers of auto electrical parts.

I've had pathetic service (and hence didn't purchase) from Paddocks in the UK.

I've also found AJAY Trading in eBay.co.uk and buying through Amazon.com in the USA to be very good.

Recently I've bought from Croytec (but still waiting for delivery) and they seem OK just a bit slow in responding to e-mails. Possibly they're a one man band.

    http://www.croytec.co.uk/

Similarly, Rimmer Bros whose site is a bit difficult to navigate but who did respond quickly to an e-mail I sent them. Again I'm waiting on a delivery so cannot confirm that they are reliable.

As others have said, it's VERY important to check delivery charges (mainly postage) before committing to any O/S purchase. High delivery charges can torpedo an otherwise reasonable purchase.

No matter what the problem - there's a solution. You've just got to find it.

    Thanks guys,

Yeah, over the last few hours or so (makes me an expert) I have been researching this a bit, some items worth it some not. Small and light enough in some instances all good, but anything bigger than say a bash plate gets out there pretty quick. A few quick sums on the parts that are worth it are only that way because the dollar is strong, a few blips down and it becomes not so worth it all of a sudden. I've bought stuff from OS quite a bit (not car bits, books, small boat parts bla bla bla) and always found it reasonable, and in some instances cheaper and quicker than I could get stuff from the other end of oz, but, apples and pears.......

It was just a general question in the general forum about peoples general experiences generally. The ozzie in me says buy stuff locally and keep a bloke in the job, or make it myself (which being anal, I'd never be happy with), but some of the prices are hard to ignore, especially if some sort of deal on freight can be arranged.

Anyway, thanks for the input guys, keep up the good work.

When browsing these magazines some times they quote prices with VAT and sometimes without.

If we mail order do we pay VAT?

No VAT only applies to purchases within the UK. If it is being exported it doesn't apply.

No - but you may be liable for import duty and GST, both of which are charged on the cost of the goods plus freight. As a general rule, shipments valued at less than $1000 do not attract this, but go over that and you will be charged on the full value. And this is an administrative concession, which may change at any time without notice, plus, if they think you are making a welter of it they can charge you anyway.
