good cars, Valiants. Had AP5, VC, CL, two CM's. A CM wagon with a 340TA crate engine which got very floaty at around 220k's and never got fully wound out because of this, and a 265 ute which was a marvellous workhorse, daily driver, and tug/tourer.

My 1970 Dodge Challenger with Hemi 426 got around 12mpg in normal use, and 6-8 if you asked it to go.

Friggin teasing me with ya 340's .....

Valiants floating?? ... Never heard of it // thought it was standard good ol yank suspension at it's prime

Try the 69 Hemi 245 at 90 mph ... you could go faster, IF you didn't get so seasick

If I could get one of them back ... it'ld be the panelvan

The Hemi Challenger was a standard convertible body with no aerodynamic aids and it got bloody floaty at 220+. Still had heaps left in it at that. It could wheelspin at 120mph in third gear on dry concrete (Concord Road).

Nothing wrong with Valiant suspension if you built it for the application. Soft ride family car is what they came as. Change torsion bars, fit Aeon rubber suspension lumps instead of rubber bump stops, lower the inner pivots of the upper control arms by as much as you could, all polyurethane bushes, heavy anti-roll bar. For the rear, utility springs and add an extra second leaf upside down and Kurtis pattern Jacobs Ladders for lateral location. Good gas shocks all around and the old growlers handle like a race car. They do need a front air dam and a rear spoiler to pin them down at higher speeds.

they had to be secretive so you would pay them for 3 hours labour for them to replace your interior light fuse.......

they saw an opportunity and took it........

wierd..... my '94 XR8 is still on its original leads, had its original radiator, thermostat and hoses till last weekend, smartlock module was replaced at 180,000km

only parts that have failed on me in the last 70,000km have been:
heater tap (ruptured while i was being naughty)
thermostat (suspected original thermostat, had lasted 310,000km)
exhaust manifold gaskets (aftermarket exhaust, replaced with OEM gaskets and no more leaks)
steering wheel slip ring contact pins (again, 310,000+ km..... its fair enough!)

burns a litre of oil every 5,000km (starts at 3,000 and i change at 5,000)
averages 10.3L/100km cruising at 110 and getting thrashed around town
only thing I'm not really happy with is how i seem to go through rear tyres every 20-25,000km.....

other than that, according to maintenance records (and a chat with the mechanic who serviced it back in the 90's) its never had any problems.....

i guess some cars are just lemons.....
