Yep!! I agree, Stockton caravan park is an ideal spot to camp and visit the local areas, If you are into wine tasting Pokolbin vineyards are only an hour away, Dolphin watching at Nelson Bay is half an hour away, and Stockton beach is a must see on any 4WD list. Also Newcastle and Lake Macquarie have some of the finest beaches on the coast. Also Lake Macquarie (half an hour away) is the largest salt water lake in Australia with some very pretty scenery. Hope that helps!!!![]()

IMHO, it's easier to say what not to see that what you must see...
I don't see a bad suggestion listed above, but you can feel that every rock formation starts to look like every other one after a while etc etc...there will always be yet another "must see" that you just don't have time for or you will spend all your time in NT and nothing anywhere else! (not necessarily a bad thing actually!) But assuming you want to complete the loop planned out, I would try and choose maybe 80% of the itinery up from and leave 1-2 days a week for decisions to be taken on the spot. Classic example would be giving yourself a chance to put the feet up for a week on a beach somewhere unplanned, or extending a stay in a favourite spot...
Don't forget places like the vic high country, the border track, the great ocean road, wilson's prom etc... if you are prepared to walk a bit too, then do a hike regularly too - good for the soul and the body after days of driving...
I would suggest after leaving Canberra, head East to Batemans Bay (Kings Hwy.) then head South and experience the Nature Coast and the mountains, then the Sapphire Coast to Eden then follow the Princes Hwy onto Melbourne.
Much more exciting than the Hume Hwy. to Melbourne, Regards Frank.
