    Records and players .

Who still has a record player and uses it . I was given one a couple of weeks ago and played a couple of my Dads old black sabbath records . What a fantastic sound a record player makes . Mine is a Philips GF-748 player . It has the Bass , Treble and Balance adjustments as well as a filter that can be turned off and a party switch that makes the vocals louder . .

Yep, wish I had kept more vinyl. I have a Pro-Ject turntable. The closest I've got to vinyl sound is the SACD of Deep Purple's Machine Head. It is fully remastered to 4 channel and matches the original quadraphonic LP. Still has that lovely stuffy warm sound.

If you've never heard Highway Star, Smoke on the Water or Space Truckin' in 4 channel you're missing out on something.

That said the best demo of 5.1 I can think of is the SACD of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It's incredible! There is something that changes when you listen to it on LP that has been lost though in the precision of the SACD (apart from not being played in quadraphonic like it was intended to be).

I've got an AR turntable with a mission arm and a rather expensive "needle" I also treated myself to a rather expensive cd player (could of got a nice defender with that amount of $$ ) when I sold up in the uk. It plays anything you can throw at it and plays it rather well, but sometimes I can play some vinyl and it just sounds so much warmer and real.

I do find sacd's sound excellent, Clare Martin singing "black coffee" sounds like you are on the front table at Ronnie Scotts

But why when I enquire in a record store, do they say they've never heard of an sacd

Check out Linn Records - The best recordings in Studio Master Download, Vinyl and SACD for some quality listening their equipments pretty good too

I did the unthinkable years ago and got rid of the vinyl collection. I got rid of soooooo many awesome albums which in some ways i'm kicking myself for, but in other ways couldn't care less...there was no player and I had the CD versions.

One thing that I learned was that my mum was into some pretty awesome stuff back in the 70's. I grew up listening to all of these, and enjoyed hours of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Meatloaf, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, and all that kind of style. The old girl was more out there than I gave her credit for.

My ipod's got all the stuff we had on lp which i grew up listening to, and enjoy every minute of listening pleasure.

I still play my vinyl on an old JVC turn table, I still buy vinyl both new and old pressings. I fact vinyl is making a come back, more vinyl has been sold in the last 2 years than in the previous 10 years combined.

One reason for this is that vinyl give your a purer sound than cd's. I love cd's they are easy and convenient to use but the sound of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc.... on vinyl just can't be beaten.

And you would be surprised on how much some of your old vinyl is worth eg. Pink Floyd DSOTM 1st pressing with poster and slickers in good condition is worth over a $100 to a collector.

For a small outlay of around $5000 you can also buy a laser turn table, they will play your vinyl with out damaging it and it also removes all the pop's, crackles and it play's straight over scratches.

If you want to know what your old vinyl is worth have a look at some of the sites on the net or Record Collector Magazine you will be surprised.

Still got the 'majority' of my vinyl collection. Couple of years ago (probably more like 6 ) I bought a new turntable, but recently bought one of the usb turntables and have been slowly turning my vinyls into mp3s to fill in the gaps in other collections.

Still have the first LP I bought - Deep Purple in concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - 1972?
