i wouldnt bother going brushless in a crawler. I ran a novak ss5800 brushless in my CR-01 crawler and the brake hold was woeful and the car was way over powered.

I now run a tamiya crawler stock and a novak super rooster. The car runs for 40mins plus on one 4000mah lipo.

My clod crawler runs two integy 55t lathers and two cheapo Moped esc's

Brushless motor as slightly more effcient that a brushed and require far less maintenance (read none) compared to a brushed motor. A brushed will last for ever in a crawler though.

A good old silver can johnson 740 makes quite a good crawler motor. Good throttle resolution and brake hold are more important in a crawler IMHO.

I run hitec 645mg's as im running 2.2" tires on my crawlers and they are plenty stronger enough (have bent tie rods with these servos).

    I love my crawlers....

I was looking at getting an axial scorpion a while back but ended up buying a baja 5b to use on the beach,.... much fun... when its not broken..

Im still keen to get a crawler though, i would like to build one with one of the HPI land rover bodies on it

RCCrawler.com- Your #1 source for Radio Controlled Rockcrawling! is packed with info. some spankers on there but mostly okay.

NiMH or Lipo doesnt matter as far as the motors concerned. A lipo is heaps lighter which is a plus becasue IIRC the axial mounts the battery up high so a little battery helps lower the C.O.G

I have had great success with the quality of products and customer service from:
HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store :

    I run this battery:
    HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : ZIPPY Flightmax 4000mAh 2S1P 25C Car Lipoly $24.79

    and this charger:
    HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : Turnigy Accucel-6 50W 5A Balancer/Charger $34.99

LiPo's have some specific charging requirements but most LiPo chargers will take care of the process. Just dont try and pump two many amps into them. A basic rull of thumb is 1 amp per 1000mah. This will make charging longer (1 hour for the 4000mah pack) but you pack will last longer and take a full capacity charge each time
Most LiPo chargers will charge NiMH's but most NiMH chargers wont charge lipo's.

    cheers
    Luke

HPI ave just released a re4ady to run version of their crawler king with a defender body, it's not a bad way to go. its not a full blown crawler, but a bit of fun.

As to wether to go brushless or not, unless you are going to throw some money at a brushless system and lipos, you are better off sticking with a basic brushed setup I think.
