Jock, you have a point there.

Too many young people today seem to think that it is more important for them to be aware of the latest exploits or pronouncements of the likes of Britney Spears or Paris Hilton than to have some knowledge of events that really matter.

How can they possibly focus on something as important as who their state premier is, just how far wide of the mark Chamberlain was when he claimed the Munich Agreement represented "peace for our time" or what went wrong at Chernobyl when they have been brought up to believe that it is more important to know the names of the children adopted by Madonna than to know the name of their local member?

Young people seem to be maturing earlier physically, but later mentally.

Let's see, l am 51, my parents were both children during WW2 and suffered at the hands of the Germans and Italians and so we had direct experience of WW2 kiddies today parents were born in the 1970's they aren't being taught by their parents about history as they themselves were children of the post war boomers.

Parental abilities or standards are simply falling further and further and the kiddies of today are the product of that standard.

Sure we have always had problem children, crime, graffiti, vandalism and we always will have it, but now we have clueless parents having clueless children and clueless children will have even more clueless children.

All this is more complicated by Australian culture and standards being over taken by American pop culture and that includes the way girls are dressed and treated as whores and bimbos and white boys wearing baggy pants that show off their underpants and they want to talk like ghetto dwelling Afro American gangster rappers (who despite the language, clothing and lyrics are all millionaires)

Sad but true it's only going to get worse

My daughter had never heard of Hiroshima or the atomic bomb. How could our education system fail to teach our kids about one of the singular most important evens that took place last century.

The education system is stuffed and this is not necessarily caused by teachers themselves but they, in my opinion, are a part of the problem.

This is more so an Australian problem as the system here now teaches our kids that they must have a uni education if they want a so called decent job.

The problem is that now we have all these uni educated people running different levels of business but MOST would not have a clew what they are doing and are nothing more than parrots.

I know from personal experience from being on the railway in NSW that the majority of managerial positions are either held by labour party arse wipes or university rejects.

The end result is that the railways no long work efficiently and is costing the tax payers a fortune, just to keep these rejects and butt kissers in high paid jobs.

No the education system is not working.

Maybe parents shouldn't expect schools to do all the educating. There's no way I'll rely on the education system to teach the history that I think is important for my children to know.

I'm making it a priority from early in my kids lives to be teaching them important history. I would encourage any parent to do the same. As is evident, the education system is not to be relied upon. Better a little hard work now than to get annoyed with the system later on.

If you want a laugh at some not so very cerebral people, look up Jay Leno and his "jaywalking" on youtube. I would assume we have the same level of stupidity in Oz. Scary how dumb some people are, and what's frightening is they breed.......

i understand the disappointment that most posters have posted here. but it seems that time erasers a lot of common history.

i grew up with my grand parents. getting up at 6am on ANZAC day to be ready for dawn parade. and as a tot my self mixing the whisky and water for the dozen or so sitting on the front porch as others came and went. 4 years ago there was only my grandfather and one other and i mix more water than whisky.

my point is that it is 60 od years on, what sort of response would we get from a teenager in 1940 if we were to ask about the Crimean?

i am not saying its correct and i feel a bit sad about it all BUT.

I hate to tell you this but the world that our children live in is the one we have decided for them to live. They are not responsible for the education system they endure. The government and leaders responsible for implimenting the current state of affairs are our doing. We are the ones who apparently voted responsibly for the countries leaders who decide on our behalf how things are done. Who fostered internet? Who established current rules on interpersonal relationships? Who allowed the rediculous standards of behaviour on television? Who promoted alcahol, drugs and lewd sexual behaviour in our society? I can go on and here, but it was and is us (we are the money makers, the advertisers) who have lead our children to where they are now.
Hey Teachers.....leave our kids alone.

This is a sad state of affairs but hardly surprising in this day and age. The current environment of instant gratification leads to such a short attention span that quite a lot of the current generation only have time for their own ridiculous antics and those of their friends posted on social networking sites.

As for this complete load of drivel, I have never heard a more misguided and pathetic observation in all my life. I was a child of the 70's, My father was born 4/3/42 which in case you were not aware was the day that Japan bombed Broome, which was considered Australia's second-worst air raid.

I completely resent you blaming children of the 70's and their poor parenting as the root of all the problems of society. If anything it was the children born to the people of your generation, those that were breeding in the late 80's and 90's, and spawned the current generation Y.

Not to cast aspersions on all from this generation (as there are always bad apples), but due to the fact that their children 'should not have to experience any criticism' nor should there be 'winners and losers', they should all be 'given what they want without any question' and 'heaven forbid you should discipline your child!'

It is generation Y that expects to walk into the top job straight out of uni, without any concept having to prove yourself or of working your way up to a position, because they have always received everything on a platter.

Maybe it's different on that side of the Australia, perhaps Western Australia is a decade behind NSW (this would explain your observations I guess) but cartm58 you should have a good look at yourself and those around you and you might see where the problems really have stemmed from.

You have no right to criticise the new parents of today, considering that the people who have been described in these situations are all from generation Y, the generation born to parents of your generation, the post war baby boomers - those born in and around the 60's. I think this is a serious case of the pot calling the kettle black.

If anything the children born in the 70's have learned from the mistakes of those who came before them and would do an even better job raising their children. I know I have and I definitely will not be allowing my children to grow up like the current generation Y.

I am happy to introduce you to my 3 year old and let you judge for yourself.
