Children in front seat of cars

    Link

Prompts me to comment that in our family it has always been a strict rule that children are never to be in the front seat of a vehicle unless accompanied by an adult at all times.

I get all twitchy when I see instances of children pretending to drive, standing/sitting alone in a car driver's seat, playing with switches, levers etc.
Especially when parked on a slope as this one must have been.

    Comments?

    cheers

Children most definitely should not be in the front of a car with air-bags. That even applies when there is a booster seat.

IMPO children should get used to riding in the back from very early in life, no arguments just like taking medicine there should be no arguments. No "I don't like it", spitting it out or kicking or screaming and throwing tantrums.

A child who gets to this point as a three year old (or older) was taught to be that way as an infant or toddler. You can't believe the number of parents I have seen who "negotiate" with their baby or toddler about taking medicine. These are the same children who come back as a five year old who scream the department down when given oral medicine. They will be the same children who throw tantrums in supermarkets when they don't get the sweet.

It is illegal for a child (7 or younger IIRC) to ride in the front of a vehicle fitted with a second row of seating (eg. not a single cab ute). They can only travel in the front if all other seats are occupied by (> 7 YO) children.

there is a bit more detail to the law,but that is the general concept.

Yep!! that is correct, the air bag going off in an accident can seriously injure or kill a small child. Also, in all modern four vehicles you have child locks on the back doors which restrict a child opening the door when the vehicle is moving!!

    Hi,
I am mostly referring to children playing in the front seat of a parked car, that really makes me twitchy.
Our rules were no kids unaccompanied in the car.
No one in the driver's seat or touching any controls/switches unless licensed.
    cheers

Children left unattended in a car is also illegal.

It frequently happens in the carparks of casinos with gambling addicted parent/s.

    Can you generalise some more.

There is a law that restricts kids in front seats under a certain age unless its a Utility where there is no option and they are now fitted with child safety anchor point.
    I know because I have A; A child B: A ute

    Another unsupported quote.

The news does sometimes highlight this but only when footy just does not make the headlines.

Are all people that gamble addicted?

Are all Landrover drivers/owners a bit strange?

    That may have changed tho

Until I get grandchildren, I won't be needing to think about it but I'd always put kids in the back regardless

    ....
Sorry I didn't know that I needed to quote the source.
