Yep, turning off ignition, applying handbrake or putting into neutral would work.
on the news they said there was a major recall of toyota vehicles due to the throttle jamming, people have died not being able to stop and the car just keeps building up speed. Reckon it was caused my Front floor mats may be jamming the pedal.
Surely if you are in a car that has suddenly increased in speed you wouldn't just sit there and steer it to your death. One driver did on a highway, the passenger had time to ring 911 to tell them of the problem, then they went through an intersection and sadly met their fate.
I would have thought turning of the ignition would have stopped the fuel and eventually the vehicle would have to stop. Suppose panic set in

My 120 does this some timesDont panic, just stick the foot under it when it does this. Should I fix it soon
I guess with an auto some would panic.
read the article a while ago, hit a bit close to home!
I've had the throttle jam open in my mum's IS300. same scenario, pedal to the metal and the end of it got stuck on the floor mat. freaked me out for a second, took my foot off the gas and..hang on, the car's still accellerating!
mashed the pedal again and it came free.
reminds me of the other news story of some young bloke, trying to save fuel by rolling down a hill. so he turns his car off, then takes the key out of the ignition! gets to the bottom of the hill, tries to turn, steering lock engages and he kills himself in the rear end of a garbage truck...sad waste of a life.
used to happen in our D1, and was very scary.
It was no use putting on the brakes as the "mighty" 3.5 would easily overpower the "mighty" LR D1 brakes. I had to de clutch, which of course resulted in valve bounce, turn off and on the ignition to maintain steering and brakes and avoid crashing all at the same time.
Found out later on that there was a recall of D1s (called a Field Service) to replace/fix the throttle stop end, to prevent it jamming against the throttle body. We fixed it eventually by some bending and grinding to stop the sharp edge of the throttle lever stop from jamming into the alloy of the throttle body.
I can see how people might panicFortunately I was used to this having had many British junkers which we used for bush bashing, eg., Morrie Minors, vanguards and various Fords Anglia's Austins A Series etc all of which from memory would do this if abused for long enough, usually because the cable frayed from endless stomping on the throttle jamming in the spiral metal sleeving
My 10 year old refused to travel in the Disco after this happened, it freaked her out so much![]()
I had that happen in a V8 auto Disco2.
The black plastic engine cover wasn't fitted properly and slipped out of position jamming the throttle.
I just braked, pulled over and switched off the ignition when it was safe then stopped. Not too hard to figure out.
It was a test drive of a caryard car too.
Ok lets see, its to do with America and Toyota, hmmmmmmm
maybe a few less of them both could'nt hurt could it![]()
