How to move a motorbike backwards up a slope...

Completely non LR question, and I have done quite a bit of searching on Google, but can't come up with a standard way to move a motorbike backwards up a slope.

I got a bit stuck tonight after riding down a steepish drive and couldn't easily turn around.

There must be an easy way to do this.

The best I can do is to compress the front forks with the front brakes, and 'bounce' back about 1 inch, and repeat a lot (getting exhausted in the process).

    Any techniques you can suggest?

    Thanks
    David

    Engage reverse, what......you haven't got a Goldwing?
Put bike on centre stand, pull it toward you and pivot it 180*

If it is an old 2 stroke with good compression you may just be lucky enough to get it to fire before TDC and have the motor run in reverse. Had this happen to me on a DT400. Lucky it was on the sand but still quite a shock letting the clutch out and taking off in reverse.

Otherwise time for a mate with a rope hitched to the Landy.

Haven't got a goldwing!! 6 gears, but all forward.

Like the idea of pivoting it. Do you mean the side-stand or the centre-stand? The bike is pretty heavy (250Kg) so would need to practice on some flat ground first methinks.

    Tks

while holing a good dose of RPMS, load up the front brake, lean well back on the bike, throw your weight forwards and kick up the pegs, drop the clutch out in first then lean left or right, drop that sides leg down and punt the bike around using the front wheel as a pivot while the back wheel spins.

once you've turned 180 ease off the front brake and the revs then you should be able to ride up the slope.

Im with Dave, but dont stop at 180deg,go around again for the hell of it and then keep it layin rubber out of the dohie and up the drive.
Quite a recipe for disaster but once practiced and mastered you wont have the problem again.

Have to agree a lot less effort than pushing.

Hmmmm - can't see myself implementing Dave's suggestion. I'd cause less damage by just stepping off and letting it tip over!!!

I think I've a way to go with my bike handling expertise before that becomes an option

What bike have you got? That goes a loooooong way to answering your question as dirtbikes, cruisers, sportsbikes, etc all have their own peculiarities and features.

Having said that, how on earth did you manage to get yourself in a situation like that in the 1st instance??? Tried a bit of low-speed riding forward while looking where you want to go, and hooking a tight u-turn? Get a mate to help you push uphill? Is the bike in neutral when you're pushing it back?

Other than that, put the side-stand down, cover the front brake, lean back putting all the weight on the side-stand and swing the sucker around. Grab the front brake immediately when it's facing the right way. That's how we do things in pitlane on trackdays.
